I know a VX3200 question is slightly off-topic here, but I note that mobileaction has this software for both the VX5200 and VX3200 (which is nice because we have both on our family plan) -- I haven't tried their VX5200 version yet (that phone wasn't home yesterday) but I did try their VX3200 software with my phone and it wouldn't connect to the phone -- it just sits there with the status line at the bottom of its screen saying it is trying to connect to the phone.

I have pretty much the same problem with bitpim not connecting to the phone -- BUT the verizon branded phonebook software connects to the phone just fine (unfortunately the vzw software has known problems with how it handles the data file).
