PTT facts for Big Orange

hot_md_guy

Aug 21, 2005, 3:23 PM
No, the Nokia 6102 or 6682 will NOT be push to talk.

There will be two launch models. Samsung SGH D357 and LG 7200.

Pricing will likely be like a bolt on. Ex: $10 a month for unlimited service.

Overall network latency will be FASTER then Nextel.

Although Kodiak is employed by other carriers such as Alltel, Cingulars PTT will NOT be compatible. (in other words, you can't PTT anyone outside of Cingular)

Well that sucks! So much for PTT for Cingular. Maybe in another 2yrs. we will somethin better for in Cingular in terms of PTT. Taking them long enough in getting new phones.

Although I'd LOVE for this to be true, I've got to express some skepticism here. Faster than Nextel? I'll believe it when I see it.

"Overall network latency will be FASTER then Nextel."

that is impossible becuase nextel's latency is under 1 second when kodiak's at least 2-3 seconds. it will not be faster then nextel becuase of that plus iden was built for ptt while gsm wasnt.

it will not be faster, but it will be over a strong network though. (but we learned about that quickly. meaning verizon and sprint has bigger networks and their ptt was horrible.)

good luck.

actually, Nextel's latency when in a PTT conversation with multiple burst...(ie, beep...pause...beep...)is: 0.5 or for those not of knowledge, half a second. Very impressive.

Cingulars?

0.1

Thats right. a TENTH of a second.

also, cingular wont beat out nextel with this just like sprint and verizon didnt have any effect. kodiak, on its on is a pretty good solution, but when it will be over gsm or gprs using voip it will be bad.

----

everyone knows that nextel's ptt is instant.

i am going to say this just like i said about verizon's and sprint's push to talk, that cingular's push to talk will not get many subscribers and will fail against nextel.

Who is this Nextel we keep speaking of? They do not exist anymore. SPRINT will get rid of iden as soon as it can because they want 3g over everything.

I'm not sure that you understand what you are talking about. I undertstand that would not be a first for you, so I will explain my point.

You said the following:

"kodiak solution on its on is very good, but as mentioned before when it goes onto gsm or cdma its terrible.

Kodiak's solution is based on GSM and CDMA technology. You say that it is a good solution on it's own. To say that adding it TO GSM and CDMA makes it "terrible" is simply idiotic. If it's solution is "very good", then using it how it has been designed can not be "terrible." The statement contradicts itself.

Good luck... but I stand by my statement.

In terms of PTT on GPRS (which that feb 04 forbes article is heavy on) of course voip latency will be slower than Nextel but Cingular is already close to launching UMTS (limited cities in 2006, and full launch in 2007). The majority of those articles posted refer mainly to 2/2.5 GPRS/EDGE, once UMTS launches (already testing in my area; SF Bay Area), it's gonna crush Sprint-Nextel. Plus GSM voice quality definitely a must...

it wont crush nextel-sprint with push to talk. that wont happen. sorry.

again 2-3 seconds vs sub second to 1 second doesnt show that kodiak and cingular will beat nextel-sprint.

I think that because Nextel and Sprint merged, although the iDEN network is incredible with PTT, they will fall behind in customers. Sprint does not have the best service, that is arguable and only my opinion, while Nextel is in the same boat with limited areas. Now the PTT is great but I don't see many people sticking around for 4G technology when 3G will be in big demand and will only be offered by the the big guys: Cingular and Verizon. They are the only two companies that will truly offer competetive rates with really good service. Even if it isn't as good as iDEN. Sure Sprint will also offer 3G but you have to look back at past performance. This is my OPINION btw and is definitely left up to discussion.

they wont fall behind in customers. they have been outweighing cingular and verizon wireless on an average customer growth for 2 straight quarters. in addition, they lead in arpu, data arpu, and lifetime revenue per user.

by the way your looking at past performance with sprint? well sprint has the highiest data arpu for a long time.

thanks for the opinion.

It sounds to me like some people are upset about Cingular getting PTT. I mean YOU ALL haven't even tried it and are already "dogging" it. Come ON!!! How can you say how horrible it will be when you haven't tried it? I am not saying that Cingular never has problems, but this is something COMPLETELY new for them! How about trying something before you judge it?!!!

becuase it is on a technology that hasnt been good what-so-ever with push to talk. verizon, sprint didnt work out and they have a better network and bigger network then cingular has.

the point is when you put a push to talk service over gprs, cdma, and gsm the latency will be increasing becuase those networks werent built for fast speeds with push to talk.

i am not getting upset. i am just saying facts.

tied into one company? i am talking about all companies becuase when you have ownership in shares of dt (tmobile's daddy), vod and verizon (verizon wireless' parents, sbc and bell south (cingular's daddies) and sprint-nextel you want to talk about all of the companies at hand since i basically either indirectly or directly own the whole wireless sector. (with carriers.)

brainwashed? i think on my own my friend.

That is their problem. I know better however, and this is my gain. You do not own controlling stock in any company. The truth is you work for a company that owns you. Sarah is right. Verizon doesn't really tell you that...but if you look at their coverage map and click on 'enhanced services', you will notice that all the sudden the coverage area drops considerably.

Things like voicemail indicator, data service and PTT don't work unless you're in this small area. Verizon does have good coverage...but since a big part of their network is roaming agreements with smaller carriers, they just simply can't make all their features avaiable everywhere.

Cingular does have an edge (no pun i...

"I would be shocked if that were true. It's practically impossible for any kind of PTT over GPRS to reach that kind of performance.

I'm not saying Cingular's PTT doesn't perform well - I'm just saying "on par with Nextel" isn't realistic."

"I wouldn't just lump those two together so casually. At the moment, Sprint's is much better than Verizon's. I would expect Cingular's system to be roughly on par with Sprint's."

Dude - get over it. Anyhow the speed won't be the only benefit of the Cingular offer. You can do quick groups on the fly, you can change your availability so that calls don't interupt you in a meeting, you can have call waiting, one number for PTT & standard calls, you can go from a PTT conversation to a full duplex call without hanging up & re-dialing, its a flat rate, no nickel & diming for group calls, it will work internationally by 1Q 06, plus there will be phones by companies other then Motorola. 🙂 So what if the Nextel call set up is faster by a second, that isn't that big of a deal.
...
nextel18

Sep 15, 2005, 5:25 PM
call waiting? lol. no point of having call waiting when your on the push to talk. why dont you just call them instead of push to talk?

you can change your availability too with nextel lol or with any other provider with push to talk is to shut your phone off lol.

one number for push to talk and for regular calling is a bad idea becuase push to talk is for privacy you dont want strangers to just push to talk you for the fun of it.

not saying the big deal i am just saying cingular wont do well against the other companies. perhaps it will do well against verizon but not sprint or nextel becuase of their data products.

Does anyone really like CRAPTEL??? Why is the Walkie Talkie feature so impressive? IT IS LIKE GOING BACK IN TIME 25 YEARS! Why on earth would you want everyone around you to hear what you have to say and then hear that awful beep after you let go of the button. It is by far the worst feature ever released for wireless phones. I have the unfortunate task of testing the LG 7200 and I'm not looking forward to it. Seems to me that Mobile to Mobile works basically the same way, just not as quick and you get the luxury of interrupting the other person while they're talking if needed, unlike on CRAPTEL where you have to listen to everything the other person says before you can respond. Lets keep moving forward and leave this ancient feature behind!...
