mp3s as ringtones?

can I use mp3s as ringtones that I put on my SD Card? Also can I use photos as wall paper that I put on the SD Card from my computer? I'm just seeing if it's worth it to purchase a mini SD.

Ringtones:
Under Version 1 YES.
Under Version 2 not really. They can be put on but they will cease to function as ringtones when you power the phone off and back on -- they would have to be re-added to work again.

Wallpaper/Pix/Flix:
Yes

Thanks for the response. So now... what's the difference between version one and two?

Also is there another format that I can change an mp3 to to get it to work permenently?

Basically I want to find out how to get good ringtones I can make myself without using a usb cable or get it now. Can this be done?

If a usb cable is the only way is it easy?
