What purpose does the USB cable serve?

If you have the USB cable can you avoid having to buy a card reader to put files onto an SD card?
..or is the card reader the only way to transfer files?

Depends upon the files. To put MP3s, pix and flix on you can do it via card reader or via cable -- beware cable is very slow. For ringers you need a cable.
