I just broke off the little end of it trying to get the thing off, is it really needed to have on other then a dust cover?

You don't really need it. It serves no purpose other than to cover up the port and keep dust or particles out. The Verizon stores have tons of these, so if you really want it on there, just go to a store and ask them for one, they will give it to you for free.
