its the opposite. you write the text message and it will speak it back to you in an annoying voice. nothing cool unless you just want to hear what you type??

Honestly, I've been wondering what productivity this could create or promote? Normally a company doesn't develop a feature (such as text to voice) unless they see a market niche they could be fulfilling, so what is the niche?

You know something, Im wondering that also. I know for a fact that the new Samsung a-970 Will have speech to text in which you can verbally speak a text message into the phone and watch the words appear on the screen. I was reading up on that on this website i belive.

I just bought the 970 and I'm returning it for a few reasons. One of them is that the speech to text feature works nothing like I had hoped. You have to do at least 2 key presses, hold down a key while you talk, and you have to say one... word... at... a... time... Even then, it usually screws up something.

I study Human Factors, which is the Psychology of how people interact with objects, and I originally thought that the speech-to-text on the 970 would be safer while driving than typing. I was wrong, because of the lack of capable voice technology to do it correctly. I found myself looking at the screen much more than when I'd type (without looking), since so many words needed edited.

I just bought a 9800 and love it so much more t...

I would guess the niche is the deaf. My cousin is deaf and he is constantly using his Sidekick, along with other deaf people I have seen...a lot use Sidekicks to communicate especially with those who do not know sign language, so I guess the text to speach would be handy in that case.

I don't mean to offend, but how is a text to speech feature on the 9800 useful for a deaf person ?

The text to speech is probably just another toy to promote the 9800's sales .. with really no useful outcome.. Most of my incoming texts have some sort of abbreviation.. for example, in order to save space and time the word *before* is typed as *b4* lol.. and *anyone* as *NE1* .. Now it's really hilario...

I am almost positive that the text to speech was a by-product of another feature on the phone. As far as i know the voice dial program only needed a couple extra lines of code to create a text to speech type program. it was probably created on a whim with the creator knowing that the product would find its niche, and it looks like it all worked out fine. I am not positive on this one tho-, so please take it with a grain of salt.

I does come in handy when driving and if you have a BT headset. If someone sends you a txt then it will just read it to you, rather than you having to look at the phone. it also tells you who its from. So you can simply call them back with the touch of a button

The text to speach is for times you cannot look at the phone like when you are in the car and get a text. You can set it to read for you

One feature I love, is if I set the phone to Announce and then ring...if I have my bluetooth headset on...as soon as I receive a text message...the phone automatically says, "Incoming message from XXXXX, ..." and then it reads the message.

This is fantastic!!! I love it.

I've selected "on + readout" in the settings ... Now if the flip is open, and I press the space button, it reads the txt message into my headset. However, it won't do it automaticaly without me hitting a button on the phone. Any ideas?

The auto display + read occurs upon the initial receipt of the text message. Manual after that.
