6230 vs 6230i

I've compared all the spec sheets i can find and some things confuse me. Says that usb and mp3 has been added to the 6230i, but doesn't the 6230 already support both these things? the nokia site also says the 6230i has an IR port and the 6230 doesn't. can anyone clear any of this up? I'm about to order a 6230 through letstalk, can't wait.

The USB on the 6230i means that it acts like a card reader, where you can just click and drag to put files on the card. The 6230 has both IR and supports Mp3's, the i version also supports AAC files and another format I dont remember right now. I would wait another month or two and get the 6230i instead.

Makoona,

I think you made the right call. The 6230 has dropped to free/you make $50 through LetsTalk.com and others because Nokia and Cingular want to make room for the 6230i. When the 6230i launches, expect it to run for around $150 online and $299 through Cingular. You can always sell one of your 6230's on ebay for $100 and take your $200 in rebates to buy an unlocked 6230i later on.

I talked to a Cingular employee about the differences and availablity. He was telling me that they have discontinued the 6230 itself b/c of reception issues. It seems that the 6230 doesn't actively search for the best connection but instead will stay w/ the Cingular connection even if it has 1 bar and lets say a differnt tower of one of their roaming buddies in the area is giving full bar. It will hang on to that weaker connection of Cingular instead of going on to the better connection with their roaming company. He was telling me that they are expecting some in this week, i live in Bham, WA so im stoked to hear about that.

Now, the sales associate didn't say that it was the 6230i, but that is what he and i figured it had to be b/c they have discontinued the 6230. Why would they be getting a shipment of discontiued product?

The 6230i has only shipped to select eastern european countries and it's only 900/1800/1900. It's highly unlikely Cingular will get an 850 model which hasn't hit the streets anywhere for quite some time.

I think he was full of doo-doo. The 6230 is back up on Cingulars website selling for $139 with a 2 yr contract. I doubt the phone has and trouble finding networks/service.

I must be full of doo-doo. I mean, when i called up Cingular they absolutely confirmed the fact that the major upgrade to this handset was the fact that it won't drop calls like the old 6230 does. I told him i was looking to switch to cingular and he told me to wait for the upgrade that the old one wasn't even worth it. Man i must be FULL of doo-doo.

I just called cingular to ask about up coming phones and the rep told me that they wont know about a new phone until the day before they sell it. Maybe she was a newbie or something but i still have hope. Keep me posted Craig.

How did you order 4 phones? Didn't you have to get 4 plans to get the rebates for each phone?

nope, somehow, with a family plan, all the phones got the rebate. I have to wait till second bill before processing some of the rebates, so I'll know more in 2 months

Unfortunately they don't send you a usb cable with it. I got mine yesterday and there is absolutely nothing in the box but the essentials. Phone, Battery, a measely 32mb mmc, and the Charger. I was told by Nokia support it would include a USB cable but the have now changed their minds and want to make even more money. Battery life has not been as good as my 6230 either. The email client is near impossible to set up. The new menu system isn't much better either.

As you have the phone already, can you please let me know if you are able to change the font color on the "wallpaper" page? I've got the 6230 and can't use any photos as wallpaper b/c I can't read caller ID in black font over any photos that aren't white.

Also...can you assign unique ringtones to callers instead of just groups?

Thanks.

I know I saw some rumors above about later this week, etc on the 6230i being released- I'm pretty sure that those are BS. Two reasons: the 6230i is not even up on NokiaUSA's "Expected Soon" page which generally has phones coming out in the next three months or so, and it is not even on the last Cingualar Roadmap I saw which has handset releases through early June.

Look for anywhere from early June to late July.
