Nokia 6682 / 6681
Replying to: I just got my Unlock Code from Cingular!!!! by cellularnovice
I just requested my Unlock Code from Cingular!!!!
Four weeks ago I had requested my unlock code from Cingular for the Nokia 6682. The agent told me that they don't have unlock codes for any Nokia phones any more (not just the 6682). Anyway, I went on an overseas trip with two phones, my 6682 for the phone book and an old GSM Nokia that I had bought overseas a long while ago. I had good reception on both phones. Since I could not put the local SIM into my 6682, I could not use it. I had not enabled international calls on it before I left.
Anyway, I am back from my trip now and decided to call Cingular again. I called yesterday and they were very accommodating and professional. She took my information and the IMEI number and told me that they will be sending me the unlock code within 3 to 5 business days. They will send it by email and VM/txt message (not sure which).
So the good news is that they are not denying the unlock codes any more and they are actually issuing them. Looking forward to receiving mine soon.
BTW, when I was overseas I found a several stores that claimed to unlock the phones. Usually, what they do is flash the memory (upgrading the phone software) from a standard Nokia binary. The software they use is called J.A.F. by a company called Odeon. You need a special cable and a Griffen box. The 6682 is encoded with a method called BB5 (not DCT4 or whatever else you find on the free and low cost websites). For the 6682 and the Cingular image, they had nothing available yet to reflash the phone. This was two weeks ago when I checked this. These hackers had everything to take care of these phones and were getting requests from people travelling from all over the world.
Of course I did a search on J.A.F. and Odeon on the web. The cost is not trivial. So unless you have a phone store and will be doing a lot of this unlocking, it will not be worth getting this and playing with it on your own.
When I got back home, we found a local person here who claimed to unlock the 6682. When we went to him, he had other software than J.A.F. and he had the cable. But he know nothing about BB5 and did not seem to understand what he was doing.
My conclusion from this, and I am no authority by any means, is that hacking of this phone is not possible yet. The standard Nokia image is not available on the net yet. However, since Cingular is giving out the unlock codes, the phone will be hackable soon. Also once the Nokia image is available, it will not be a problem at all to re-image the phone.
