Solution??

Ok guys, POSSIBLY I have discovered what is causing the glitches in our phone. I need to know, for us that are having problems with call logs/copy contacts - what kind of sim card do you have. Is it 64k or 32k. Also, mrdeth would you check yours? I believe you said you phone has no glitches in it, correct?

64K - I have the glitches.

Do you have another sim card laying around that is 32k??

64k. No, don't have 32k laying around.
What makes you think it's the sim ?

Some troubleshooting. I would almost bet my life that is what it is. 32k sim would be no problem with Cingular FW.

If memory serves me correct, mrdeth has had no issues with his phone. And he is T-mo. I don't think that is a coincedence.

Well, that might make sense then. Do you know for a fact T-Mo uses 32k. Why would Cingular put a 64k in there then. Or they don't know and that is what they always use...
...

Its a T-mo sim, not really sure if its 32k or 64k, but the issues seems to come from Cingulars 64k sim cards. They used 32k up until the merger with ATTWS and slowly started implementing the 64k. I read somewhere that 128k will soon be put into implementation. But there have been periodic issues with Cingulars 64k sim cards in the past. You know of anyone that is on T-mo that maybe you could try their sim card in your phone?

Someone at work is T-mo. I suppose I could try and use it long enough for testing puposes. I'm not in the office tomorrow.
My niece and and sister are still on old ATT, if they are 32k. But their phones are so old... I don't think they even have sims.
For that fact, I still have my old ATT sim.
I could accumulate col logs (just recycled my phone). But I would have to power off my phone to insert the ATT sim. Can't accumulate call logs usnig the ATT sim because it is
"dead". So, I don't know that that would work. Besides... are the call longs stored on the sim or phone memory ? Probably sim, huh, how they know your calls.

Not sure where the call logs are stored. I was guessing phone. However, put in your sim from ATTWS and then go to contacts. I bet you will not get the copy thing one time. I have done 5 successful power cycles and everything is fine. Also, when I checked the sim directory on the 32k card, there is only one service number as opposed to 6 on the 64k.

I'm telling ya Joe, I would bet the farm this is the problem.

If there is a problem with the SIM, that might be interfering with the phone. If the SIM would cause it to "reset" than the phone might try to clear the logs. This would also account for the fact that when you go into the address book, the phone acts as if it never saw that SIM before.

I have deleted and restored my address book several times (trying to find a solution restore that would restore everything in my address book), I have even taken my 32k SIM out of my phone a hand ful of times. But I was only ask very first time I put the 32k SIM in my phone to import the contacts.

If you look at the SIM directory on a 32k card, it lists only one number for customer service, whereas on a 64k SIM card, it shows 6 numbers.

I have 2 numbers. I checked to see if the other sim was a 32k and it was. 7 power cycles and no glitches. Is that enough testing? I'm not so sure I want to keep cutting my phone on and off too much more. I also have an extra sim card that is 32k. I think I'm gonna call Cingular and have them activate it with my number.

With my ATT sim I can't get past "not a valid sim". Won't let me do anything. When I powered back up on my Cingular sim though, my call log of myself calling from my landline was still there. But that doesn't mean nothin'. It has not been a consitent problem with me. Your testing sounds good though.

So if I call Cingular, they will activate my old sim to my number ?

Just cycled my phone again with the 64k Cing sim in there. Call log gone. But not asking to copy sim contacts after about 5 times of going into contacts. Could the mere presence of the 32k scared it into behaving better. Naw, that's just silly. Besides, as of late, I don't see the copy to sim very often.

If you have a Cingular 32k sim they can transfer you number over to it as long as they have the serial number from it.

I sent my phone to nokia to look at my problems, including the call log. I put my 64k card in my trusty 6620 and have had no problems. The call log still exists the same way is if the 32k card was in it. I guess the card is only a problem with the 6682?

what is the FW? I can check to see if it relates to my phone / SIM since I haven't had any problems with my phone.

My 32k SIM I got over 2 years ago when Cingular first started GSM service in the St. Louis area, I used it in my 3600 just fine. When I got my new phone, I didn't see the need to update to the new SIM since I was going to be down for a few hours for it to "auto activate". I even called Cingular a few days later and asked if it was required to change. They said that it was totally up to me if I wanted to change or not.

Cingular fried my 32k sim card last night. I am not happy. I am using 3.01.1 and you probably are too. Sideout said last night they are sending him a 32k sim card. I bet he gets a 64k sim card. 32k's are like finding a needle in a haystack since they aren't made anymore.

I could not get them to activate my old ATT 32k. No record found. BUT... they are sending me out at no charge a Cing 32k. If it does not solve the issues, I can reactivate my Cing 64k. As long as it is a Cing sim. I can live with that.

I put my 64k sim back in the phone and it reverted to the bugs we have been experiencing. Pretty safe bet that its compatibility issues with the 64k card. If anyone can get a 32k sim card either through a local store, kiosk, customer service or even a local street thug (LOL) I would definitely recommend doing so.

D@mn it! I called Cingular Customer support and they informed me that there are no more 32K cards, since they aren't manufactured any more. I was told to call around in hopes of finding a store that had one left.

After calling 7 stores, I'm guessing that it is not going to happen.

Here is my question, if the phone doesn't work well with the firmware, I should be able to send it to Nokia and have them fix it. The only fix I can think of is to flash it with the unbranded firmware and therefore remove the Cingular custom firmware.

I tried calling Nokia support to see what they thought, and it got me no where. She told me to send it in and IF tech felt that something was wrong THEN and only THEN would he/she upgrade my phone's firmw...

I've never sent a phone in for repair, or had the FW flashed, so I am a novice in that area. I am very upset about Cingular disabling my 32k WORKING SIM card last night. Looks like I am stuck with the bugs.

To my knowledge, once you remove a sim from an account and replace it with another, it is "burned", or not useable any longer.

If it has info on it(contacts), I believe you can still access them.

Not saying he is correct, but in talking to the Cingular rep last night, he actually sounded knowledgeable...

I received a text message from him on my cel with the ref. number for the 32k sim they are sending me (don't know why LamaZ was told no).
I aksed IF for some reason I want to go back to the 64k sim, can I call and have it activated. Only one active sim per phone. And he said, yes, I could call and have the 64k reactivated.

OK, here is another question. Does anybody have the Cingular firmware UNLOCKED with the 64K SIM Card.

The main difference between the unbranded firmware and the Cingular custom firmware is that the SIM Card is locked. Since we have already figured out that the SIM Card is causing this error, I'm guessing that the problem lies in the SIM Card locking algorithm.

If anybody out there has a Cingular branded phone that later received the IMEI unlocking code and can tell us if they have the bugs listed....then we are that much closer.

BTW, would anybody be willing to give me the unlocking code for my stroke of genius?
😁
