Nokia 6682 / 6681
help! - i want to keep my old number - how??
i think queenplato and some others have done this... if so, i need your advice.
i ordered my 6682 and should get it tomorrow.
i signed on for a new 2 year deal with cingular, and they will be giving me a new number.
currently, i still have my old AT+T contract. i didn't "upgrade", because otherwise I wouldn't have got the 6682 for $149, it would have been $249, since "migration" doesn't classify you as a new cingular user.
i want to keep my old phone number from my AT+T account, which is still active.
How can I do this???
Do I call Cingular, or go into the store? Basically, I want to keep my old number but transfer it to the new contract and new SIM in the 6682 and then cancel the old AT+T contract.

You could try to put through a LNP (local number portability) request although I don't know if that will work since you aren't technically switching carriers AND I think you need to do this when you order the phone, not after. Check with LetsTalk.com

letstalk told me the only way to keep my number was to do a migration, but that would mean that i would not be a new customer, and therefore would not really get any kind of discount on a phone, even though i basically would be signing a contract extension.
anyway despite having alternative thoughts (like waiting for a different phone to come out, etc) i went ahead and did this so now i need to figure out how to change it.

I wish you luck, you have two issues
1. you are under contract with AT&T.
2. You signed up for NEW service with cingular in consideration for a better price on the phone thru letstalk.
Migration, would have let you out of your AT&T contact without penalty.....but you haven't actually "migrated".....
To keep your number, the LNP request could be tried, but I would be surprised if they let you do it, cause this is known as "phantom churn" and they take that rather poorly, you're actually getting over on them.....

vpu2, I'm no longer under contract with AT+T... it's month to month. My contract ended a year ago. I just liked my deal so I didn't change.

hey VPU2 - I called AT+T business customer service (had a premier account) - they said I can merge my two lines of service (the new one the cingular one I got through letstalk.com), "migrate" the AT+T number over to my new Cingular account, extend my business discounts, and then cancel out my AT+T line of service... so in the end, I get, a cheaper phone, a decent service plan (not quite as good as my AT+T one!) and I get to keep my old number.. and I have my 6682!!!! 🙂

I can only tell you, I've had several requests for similar actions escalated to my supervisor, and SO FAR, none have been able to do this...........
But hey......you got your phone, so I would guess you're a happy camper......
