I bought a new SLVR L7 (The unlocked non-iTunes international version) and went to the cingular store to sign up. They signed me up really quickly, and I was happy... until I make my first phone call.
My friend, whom I never had reception issues with in the past, said to me on my first phone call to her with my new phone, "wow you sound like **** now, I dont like your new phone".
ugh!

I delt with it for about a week, having MANY DROPPED calls... really bad reception, people not hearing me, me not hearing anyone... even at times it seemed like my phone froze up (kinda like a frozen PC when it crashes) and I couldnt hang up a call - I had to power cycle the phone just to get it to hang up one time!
So I then go back to the Cingular s...

when a phone is unlocked, means you can use the phone anywhere with any provider that uses the gsm network. when they unlock the phone the have to break the code, by doing that they have to open it up and mess with it. thats why they couldn't identify your phone. My husband just got one and loves it, and works much better than his v3. Cingular has great service not only because i work for them, but i am a customer too. for 3yrs no probs at all. I hope your phone situation improves. Get a slvr from a cingular store on you'll see the difference. Thanks

I didnt get a SLVR from their store because, its cheaper where I got it from, and I HATE iTunes. I certainly dont want it on my phone bogging it down.

My phone doesnt come with iTunes, it has some generic mp3 player (which I honestly barely use anyway).

I'm thinking about purchasing a replacement though.. but now I need to seek out a new place to get it... and it isnt going to be a branded-propriatary Cingular phone either. =p

You bought a phone from where-ever. The IMEI number is not going to register on Cingular's system because you did not get it through them. The IMEI numbers are formatted differently depending on where the manufacturer will be offering the phone.
Customer service at the store did not REFUSE to help you. There was nothing they could DO to help you.
Cingular has great reception. Is your phone Quad-band or Tri-band? That would make a difference too. If you call customer service now, they should be able to "zap" the software settings to your phone.

My phone is quad-band... and since I posted the first time, i've still had a lot more dropped calls than I did with my old Verizon phone.

The unfortunate thing is, I think im getting used to it. =\

Oh, and you werent at the store with me.. they REFUSED to help me! If they would have done sometimes like appologize to me and say there was nothing they could do, that would have been a whole `nother ball of wax, and the internet probably wouldnt have heard about it.

So, you think I should call Cingular again and ask them to do something with the phone?

I had similar problems with my unlocked slvr 7 on cingular, dropped calls extremely poor voice quality till I changed my network settings -

Settings > Network > Network setup > Speed

Set this to continous.

Once I did this there was a huge improvement.

I guess as a stock phone, I don't have any options in there. Unlocking will give one more options..?
for better reception...?

I did the exact same thing, same phone and everything. absolutely nothing wrong with mine, (just because your phone freezes doesn't mean it's the service fault it's the phone)

Have you bothered to consider that maybe that it's a defective? considering that it freezes? drops calls like crazy? you can't hear or people can't hear you? sounds like a defective like me
