Verizon can really be stupid.

I'm a long time Verizon customer with a voice plan, currently on a contract running thru November.

I decided I wanted this Blackberry with a data plan. No problem, they will sell me one for the discounted, one-year (or two) price since I'm buying a data plan.

I said "ok, and also move my voice plan onto the phone ALSO".

They said "no problem, but we have to charge you retail for the phone in that case since you are cancelling your other contract".

I complained -- I was not trying to get out of my voice contract, I was willing (wanted to) keep it the same, and even offered to extend it a year to be coterminus with the Blackberry.

No go.

I wasn't trying to get a discount on the data plan (its $5 less if combined with the voi...

Before making such a decision go to another Verizon store. Depending on how long you've had your current phone you could get the Blackberry at the discounted price. Like I stated before, go to another Verizon store.

Might be worth it, though I did call customer service and ask the same question and got the same answer.

Twice.

OK, I went this time to the Chicago store in the Gold Coast area, same answer (and an even more rude salesman).

I called Customer Support, who said I should try the telesales group who might make an exception. I had already tried that a couple days earlier.

I am now on my 2nd day of trying a T-Mobile 7100t blackberry. So far I love it, but the coverage is much poorer than Verizon.

But dealing with them so far has been a delight. And the phone was cheaper. And the resulting plan was much cheaper with lots more minutes.

And it can connect up as a wireless modem to my laptop.

Yeah I hated leaving T-Mobile for Verizon but T-Mobile has bad coverage. If you travel a lot then you its hit or miss with T-Mobile. But Verizon has worked everywhere I have been. There corporate policies on the other hand are really terrrible. God help them if Cingular actually gets their act together. For now they know their are safe Cingular + ATT is the marriage of Ted Bundy to Lizzie Borden.

Verizon is too big and too arrogant. I have the blackberry and had to add a line to pay $200 rather than $400. However, I also can't use the blackberry features in Canada where I travel constantly which defeats the entire purpose of using it. If Verizon was GSM we would be having this discussion but this CDMA standard that very few countries in the world actually use is really frustrating.

However, on a bright note - their customer service people are really nice now.
