so i picked this baby up on ebay for pretty cheap, expecting to use it as a phone and a text messanger- thats it.

i call up vzw today and try to get it activated (ie switched from my old v3c) and they said that the only way to activate it is to buy the 10mb or the unlimited plan.

anyone have any insight? prior to like 2 months ago, i know you could do it.

The only reasonable way to activate the blackberry it to go with the 10 mb or unlimited data plan. Technically, a blackberry could be activated without one of those two plans, but for your sake as well as their own no VZW rep will knowingly do this for you. Reason being that w/o one of those plans, the data would be charged at about 2 cents per kb used. This creates a problem since the blackberry, by design of RIM (Research in Motion), is "always on" and always using kb even if you never use the email function. When this happens, you could easily run into a $1000+ dollar kb charge in a month without ever emailing. That is why you were told that you must a 10 mb or unlim. plan.
