Crippled Wi-Fi, Verizon Style

It appears that VZW has also crippled wifi on my phone (Samsung SCH-i730) on the protocol level. They seem to of done this so that you can not connect to the majority of wifi networks, coffee houses, etc. They have done the same thing that they did when they released Bluetooth on the v710... mention that nothing is crippled and act as if everything is implemented into it. So far they the only thing that comes close to them admitting that is the following quote...

"Why doesn't the i730 connect to my wireless access point (AP) /router?
The i730 supports wireless access points that transmit a 128bit preamble not 130bit preamble. Some wireless access points send a 130bit (i.e. Cisco, Linksys, etc). To address this issue you can upgrade the f...

Has anyone experienced this problem? I am going to be in a position to upgrade my phone very soon, and this is the phone I had planned on getting, but Wi-Fi is a big reason for getting it. Has anyone had much success/failure using Wi-Fi on this phone?

Verizon makes a bunch of money having you buy their data transfer capability. Now it does not make much sense if they let us have FREE WIFI that Samsung put on the phone, does it?

I don't know how to address this with Verizon, but I am sure that greed will prevail.

If WiFi products either interfere with other products are are not interoperable with other Wifi products then their WiFi Certifications will be revoked immediately.

Though there is nothing out there yet about the Samsung i730 since only a few people have been investigating it, but there is about other products that do not interoperate.

Verizon was also deceptive about the i730. I was told when I purchased mine that I COULD use the Wi-fi to connect to the internet at any hotspot (cafe', mall, etc.) without subscribing to their DATA Plan. And they certainly don't include in their advertising that the W-fi is crippled in any way. Now -- as everyone else is finding out-- we actually CANNOT connect at such hotspots. What a bunch of crooks! Anyone willing to start a legal investigation count me in.

HOLD ON, folks!

My i730 sees my Linksys WEP-secured access points just fine on my WLAN. You just have to put the phone in Flight Mode first (i.e., turn off the 1xRTT/EV-DO radio). Touch the antenna icon at the top of the screen to access this function.

The phone CANNOT run the cell radio and WiFi at the same time - that's pretty much common knowledge at this point. That is to say, if you're on WiFi, your incoming calls go straight to voice mail. It is a design drawback, IMO, but the phone sucks down the battery like a sponge when in WiFi, so that would only get worse if the phone and the WiFi radios ran concurrently.

I have had some problems that require me to do a soft reset in order to get the i730 to enable WiFi (poke the sma...

Just to comment on that...
I have had no problem connecting to my home network when I dont have WPA enabled... I havent yet connected to it with WPA on nor have I tried very hard... I havent tried with WEP. BUT, most coffee shops etc that I have been to do not encrypt with WEP or WPA (9/10 at least that I've seen) so I'm not sure why you wouldnt be able to connect at such a place...I know I have successfully done so on a few occasions in the past.
Also, Dave is right that you can't normally connect with WiFi AND have the phone on at the same time...except... there are registry hacks around it...it WILL eat your battery I'm sure, but the possibility exists to do it and I guess if you've got the phone on the charger in your car or in your h...

😁 Another adjustment to Daves post... Piel Frama DOES make a case for the Extended battery! Check out their site www.pielframa.com and select samsung from the dropdown menu on the right... it will show you two options for the i730 (one that says + Hi-battery)! As far as I know, he IS correct about Krusell though.

The Piel Frama is truly a work of art and it works with both the regular or extended battery. the key is to slide the phone open first then slip the case over only the keyboard. The case is build so that the clear plastic covers only the keyboard not the entire phone when it is compacted. The slider will slider over the plastic piece just fine. I guess I am really lucky so far. I am enjoying the phone and really like the lock capability but yet if you extend the phone (slide it up), all the keys can work. That way you never intentionally have some operation being performed that you don't want.

Verizon had the Wi-Fi function on the i730 crippled because if you could have the Wi-Fi and CDMA antenna on at the same time, you can use it to get online with a laptop or other Wi-Fi device. Also, since the phone is EVDO capable, you'd be getting broadband speeds on said device for $45 a month. They want you to buy an aircard and the $80 (currently $60 on special) a month EVDO data package. I mean, given a choice, which would you pick? So Verizon has made an attempt to remove that choice.

I have had no problems with Wi-Fi connections since I got my i730. I am able to use it on my home network with WPA-PSK and have also been able to log onto free Wi-Fi at at least one local restaurant and browse the web. The phone actually alerted me that it had found the wireless network.

Here is some information I received from Verizon on setting up you I730 to use WIFI.

1. Tap 'Start' the 'Settings'
2. Tap the Connections tab and select the Wi-FI icon.
3. Tap the "Wi-Fi Disabled" to enable.
4. Wi-Fi is now enabled; tap "OK" to close.

Once the Wi-Fi radido has been enabled, a Wi-Fi connection can be configured. To configue a Wi-Fi network, perform the following steps on the PDA:

3. Tap "Add New..."
4. In the Network Name type the SSID and select "The Internet" from the Connects to drop-down.
a. If this is an AdHoc netork, select "This is a device-to-device (ad hoc) connection" box.
