Verizon told me that you need a digital plan to use WI-FI

Today I was told by Verizon that I need to have a digital plan in addition to my phone service to use the WI-FI features.

This does not make sense!

Does anyone really know for sure?

Verizon said that when you connect to WI-FI the 911 features notifies Verizon that you are using the WI-FI features and then Verizon charges you for the feature. Again this make no sense!

Any comments would be appreciated!!!

I agree that it doesn't make sense. Are you agreeing with me or are you saying that the sales person is full of @$##%! and you do not need to purchase the data services from Verizon over and above the phone service AND you will not be charged in any way for using the WI-FI features?

There is no way Verizon will know that you are using the wifi.If you have seen in the post, the phone and the wifi can not work at the same time. The only way they would even know that you are surfing is if you get on the net useing there data service.

If they are saying you can't use WIFi without paying them for data service, that would mean that they will not allow you to connect to your own WiFI base station in your own home without paying them. If that is true, a ruckus needs to be made, maybe even to the FCC.

T-Mobile charges you to use their hot spots at Starbucks, Barns & Nobles, etc. if you are not a T-Mobile customer. I could maybe see VZN charging to use their public hot spots if you are not a data customer, but not in you own home.

The phone's default behavior is to 'dial' through a cell connection whenever you want to access the web. So even if Wi-Fi is available, unless you REALLY dig and change the settings, the phone will dial a cell connection to access the web. I'm sure this was planned as Verizon typically sets you for a pay-as-you-go data option. Which then will result in decent sized bills until you figure out the hidden connection snafu. I believe the phone uses the #777 as a default. Kill that option and set up your own setting to use Wi-Fi through MITS only.

OH MY GOSH!!! O.k people here the word and I'm only going to say this once so If need be take notes of something....You don't need a data plan to use WI-FI I i personally knew who was telling people that I would make it my mission to have em fired cause it is a dishonest LIE I am a sales rep just got my 730 in the mail yesterday As an employee we have to call in to have our devices activated the person who helped me offered me two options...the Ulimited plan and a pay as you go (which you just pay as you use it but it cost like 1 1/2 cent a kilobye and can add up really quickly) I declined both and informed him I would be using my WI-FI network at home, so he blocked the data (EVDO)access on my device but I can still send and recieve text me...

No, you do not need any digital plan to use Wi-Fi. I only have a phone plan. I set up Wi-Fi and it did not find my router. I called Verizon and surprising quickly got to the technical people. Their more direct number is 866-788-9387. Bottom line, I had everthing set up fine, but it did not work until the technical guy had me do a soft reset (you push the sylus into the reset hole in the bottom left of the phone (Not the speaker hole on the bottom right). Then everything worked fine.

Put it this way-- I purchased the i730 and STILL haven't had the phone service connected with Verizon. Yet, I can still use the Wi-fi just fine in my neighborhood, except for the occassional drop in signal. So, no, you DON'T NEED a data plan to use wi-fi. Only thing is that I had to config my wi-fi network card to "only access points" and under Connections select Advanced and set it to "my work network." If you use "My ISP" or "MY ISP Name" you will be required to enter a password or key to access the available network (although this way would give you a stronger wi-fi signal and more connections available to you.) Hope this helps!

I know that there is some point where you start using Verizons network... for those who have the service... is this easily apperhant?
Is it easy to know when you are using Verizons network and being charged?
I just want to use mine for the syncing with outlook and phone. Dont need network.

Another funny thing a Verizon rep told me was that I could not buy the I730 unless I did buy the data package! I went to another one and they said that was wrong. These guys are confused!

Oh well...
Thanks
This is my fist post! 🙂

I was at a Verizon store and was also told that I had to buy a data package if I bought the i-730. I saw some documentation that seemed to validate what the salesman said, although I don't recall what that was at the moment.

However, I think there are enough people that have bought the phone without the data plan that there probably is a way around it.

I know this thread is kind of old, but I thought I would add to it anyway.

Verizon requires that you have some kind of PDA/Smartphone data feature on your account. The billing system literally will not allow a PDA to be placed on the account without one. You can go with the 'pay as you go', but it charges $0.015 per kilobyte, which adds up quickly. In the sense of 'Do I have to have one to use Wi-Fi?' the answer is no, but if you have a PDA on your account, you have to have the PDA/Smartphone feature. If you have a Verizon PDA and you're not being charged a flat fee for monthly data, then you have the pay as you go.

Is it possible to kill the CDMA connection? Of course it is. Go to Start>Settings>Connections (tab)>Connection>Manage Ex...

Reps are morons....

I had an I730 for a month and a half before hooking it up to verizon. How can they charge you for wi-fi use? I didn't even have a Verizon account...

They just want you to sign up. If I didn't live in an EV-DO area, I may not have signed up and used VONAGE to talk on the phone through Wi-Fi...

THAT'S THEIR BIGGEST FEAR!

If you have easy access to Wi-Fi and are going to use Vonage (why not use Skype?), why bother getting an i-730? Just get a normal PDA that's not a phone, with Windows Mobile 5, fully intact Bluetooth and Wi-Fi? That would seem to make much more sense (although easy access to Wi-Fi is actually pretty limited).

You do NOT need EVDO/Nat'l Network through Verizon to hook up to your Wireless LAN. The way I make sure that I don't accidentally call the EVDO number for a data connection (since I canceled my data plan) is by changing the number that it uses to dial to the network. By defualt it should be set to '#777'... I think I changed it to like '1' or '#1' or something like that in the settings... so it will never connect even if it tries.
