Actually, there IS a perfect solution. SPB Phone Suite for WM5 puts a bar on your today page. I have mine showing four icons:
Missed Calls / TXT Messages / Voicemail / Email
Each icon has a number under it to show unread/unheard messages. It also has quick access to change custom audio profiles (loud, silent, normal, meeting, etc) and a quick way to turn on and off bluetooth, phone, flight mode and wifi.
It's not that expensive, but for me it was the only thing that kept me from trading my pda in for a blackberry.
