External Bluetooth GPSs & i730

RoadTrip

Jul 10, 2005, 8:58 PM
Has anyone been able to connect an external Bluetooth GPS with the i730? I took my Teletype GPS to the store and tried to do so with the demo unit. It looks like Verizon has striped out all of the standard Bluetooth applets from the OS and replaced them. The i703 could see my device but there was zero confirmation that they were actually connected. Hopefully someone out there has got this working with one of the popular mapping software titles like Copilot, Tom Tom or Teletype. If so, I would be interested to know about the interaction & compatibility of running mapping software w/Bluetooth on while taking phone calls or perhaps Internet browsing.

Anyone know if your allowed to use GPS with the i730 using Verizons PDA/smartphone plan. The disclosure mentions telemetry apps are not allowed. I would think they are talking about GPS?

Thanks for the replies! In answer to my own question concerning Teletype Bluetooth GPS units:

Samsung i730 pocket pc phone supported
July 15, 2005 - TeleType GPS now supports the Samsung i730 Pocket PC Phone. This Pocket PC Phone combo works great with the TeleType GPS 16 Channel Receiver and TeleType GPS Pro software! TeleType also recommends our live Traffic service which will allow your i730 to download up-to-date traffic and incident reports on the fly. Route quickly using the i730's built in QWERTY keyboard!

By the way, if you are considering a GPS solution, go for a seperate unit connected by Bluetooth. It's the only way to go as the seperate unit keeps it's warm start data for faster lock...

I have a NAVMAN GPS 4400 (external bluetooth GPS antenna). The GPS software installed smoothly, the i730 sync'd with the external antenna well, but I cannot get the correct com ports to communicate with the antenna. Is this a Bluetooth 1.0 problem? Neither manufacturer, Samsung nor Navman were able to help and both stated that it may be Verizon's limiting/crippling of the bluetooth functionality that prevents the use of the GPS.

Is there a way to update the bluetooth version from 1.0 to 1.5 or 2.0? Can I upgrade to Mobile 5.0?
