i703: to Wi-Fi or not to Wi-Fi - there is no question!

Let’s be clear - VZ’s bottom line is the real issue here! VZ is not going to cut off its nose to spite its face – meaning – why offer Wi-Fi capable devices especially when millions of capital dollars have been invested in order to roll out EV-DO? Hot spots are cropping up everywhere, and other wireless broadband technologies are right around the corner. VZ has a goal, and that is to make its shareholders money by getting a return on its investment (ROI). T-Mobile can offer Wi-Fi enabled smartphones or PDA-phones because they don’t have a wireless broadband network (EDGE is not it) in the US and Cingular is still rolling out its WCDMA (UMTS) network, with plans to scale back the number of markets initially. I can use a plain ole Pocket P...

You made excellent points except that you almost answered your own question. why would someone buy this phone for its Wifi capabilities to use Skype when they can just use a plain old pocket PC to do the same thing. I know for my company the advantage of Wifi (I wont purchase this phone w/o Wifi)is overseas we have people that travel overseas that I would like to have access to e-mail w/o wifi this is impossible on verizon's network. It is a great plus Wifi combined with EV-DO to get corporate clients who would otherwise be with Cingular.

personally, I'll get it either way. my old pda died , its well over 4 years old and out of warranty. I'd love it if WiFi Is enabled, VZW 1xEVDO is fast , but not quite as fast as the 11mb 802.11B can reach. now if it only had a camera....

It does have wi-fi. Jerry Nycom (owner of Nycom cellular) posted the spec sheet on pdaphonehome.com. He also shows pictures of him using wifi. Just go to pdaphonehome.com and go to the i730 release date forum and find it if you want.

Yes, the i730 is Wi-Fi capable, but that's not the point I'm trying to convey. VZ has the option to disable that functionality. Again, VZ invested millions of dollars into EVDO for its customers to use and generate revenue for VZ. Broadband prices continue to drop and VZ Broadband Access prices will too, as more users subscribe, including EVDO-capable cellphone users. Moreover, the type of content VZ offers and the right price points are paramount.

Well, the i730 for Verizon will have Wi-Fi. The specs sheet, which I give a link to in my previous post is being sent to Verizon dealers like Nycom, which was posted by Jerry Nycom (that's where that spec sheet came from). He also has a bunch of really good pictures (comparisons with Treo and even using the Wi-Fi). You should check 'em out. Sorry for the confusion....

Thanks for the article. I am just curious where they get their information. As I stated earlier, Jerry Nycom, owner of Nycome Cellular has been posting information on pdaphonehome.com. Here is the link:

He will answer any questions you have and will take comparison pictures with just about any phone seeing as he owns a cell phone store.... As you will see from the pictures it has wi-fi. Have a good one....

Far too many people get hung up on concerns that any one feature will bring down the house of cards for any product or vendor. Releasing a phone with Wi-Fi really doesn't present a threat to the business model of Verizon. You would have to have an entire user population jump onto the beneifts and stop using other services which is not likely. This gives great flexibility ( Wi-Fi) but being able to exist with the Wi-Fi only would be very tough for most users. I am wicked excited about this phone, and they need to get it out of the cage, now!

Can anyone speak to the security of a WiFi connection? I remember reading something about TMobile losing some very private info to hackers on their network. I imagine VW doesn't want to risk that happening to their customers.
That being said... I for one would still like to have it! 😁

The WIFI security would not be based upon Verizon, it would be the security of whatever WIFI network you are accessing. A WIFI connection would have nothing to do with Verizon at all.
