Hey I have just got a 8100 and i have been reading these forums trying to figure out what i need to do to get MP3's as ringtones instead of downloading them from the get it now. If there is a way which it looks like there is, give me a reply. If u could put it in to layman's terms it would be great just getting into this stuff. thankx

First, go to www.ebay.com. Next, go to Cell Phones > Phone Accessories > USB Cables > then search for LG 8100. Buy a cable. Recieve Cable. Get bitpim (search for it on yahoo). Connect phone to bitpim. Click on ringers in bitpim. Click add. Convert (make sure 2 channels). Take it down to 30 seconds. OK. Then go to send phone data. Check ringers and add. Violla, you have ringers. ALso search forums. Tons of crap about it here.

If you have the songs in the proper format, can you just drag and drop to "My_Ringtones" or does that even exist?

No, you cannot drag and drop. The only way to put ringtones onto your phone besides GIN, is to use Bitpim and either a data cable or USB Bluetooth adapter.

YES, I do believe you need the data cable (not sure about bluetooth for ringers). The cables are cheap and bitpim is free. The previous post is dead-on on how to put them on your phone. It is very easy. I used to use an older version of BitPim with my vx6000, but switched to the newest ver with my vx8100. They sure have been adding features to it. I used tohave to use other programs to convert/edit my mp3's first then put them on. The latest BitPim makes it verrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyy easy....

Go for it, it's easy and fun,,,

If you buy the cable on EBAY be sure to get the drivers. Several people have posted about buying a cable w/o drivers. The easiest way is to use bluetooth.

I've got the same problem as Verizonphoneguy. How do you save ringtones so that when you turn the phone off and on they are still there?

I don't have this problem. I was
able to save the full MP3 songs in
high sample rate format (48k), and
play them under my rington directory.
Using this way, you don't even need
a mini-SD card ๐Ÿ™‚

Do you have V7? It worked fine with older versions. Did you add them with BitPim? Did you do anything to your my_ringtone.dat? Do they disappear when you turn the phone off?

One thing I've noticed, not sure if this will help or not, is that once you add the ringers via bitpim, if you reboot the phone with bitpim itself, the ringers show up and work fine.

The way I do it is when I'm in the file system, I navigate to the ringers folder, add whatever ringers I want, then right click in the window and choose the option to "reboot phone".

However I have an issue that maybe someone can help me with. I don't delete the "myringer.dat and ringtonesize.dat" files. Anyway once I load in the ringers I want, reboot the phone, they show up and all is well, except for the fact that any ringtones I had in the phone prior to that get moved. Like for example....lets say my phone was set up like this. I go into contacts......

I read on the verizon website that the MP3 player is replaced as an "upgrade" to the Vcast software. I have not purchased this phone yet, because I suspected that something like this might be the case. According to the site the vcast software uses WMA (windows media format) and it also has instructions for converting mp3s to wma. I'm curious - if these files can be used as ringtones. I don't want to be locked into buying their vcast music.

Verizon FAQ - "the native MP3 player on your phone will be removed and the "V Cast" music application will be installed on your phone"

This is false. Yes it turns off the MP3 player and teh capability of the phone to recognize MP3's, but if you look around the forums all you have to do is go into the programming menu of the phone and turn it back on.
On a side note...the article referenced by the link....bad wording on Verizon's part...because the software flash doesn't "remove" anything. Secondly, if it did remove it, the mp3 player was one of the phones main marketing angles. Does the phrase false advertising or misrepresentation mean anything to you? Lol....if you are familiar with Verizon and their phone debacles in the past, do some research on the Motorola V710 and the bluetooth issues they had with that. Mainly because they said the phone was bluetooth, but failed ...
