Mary 424--A Question

Prof

Mary,
Have you put your own ringtones on the 8100? I direct this towards you because you and I, I think, have similar views about actually hacking the phone/endangering the warranty.
I ask because I have tried the BitPim method with no success.
Thanks so for your time 🙂

Prof,
Yes, I have put ringtones on and have done it via Bitpim. I figured this was a safe bet and it's not endangering the phone in any way. What sort of problems are you having with Bitpim? I connected my phone to my PC via a Bluetooth USB adapter using the software that came with it, I then opened Bitpim, went to ringers, clicked add, put all the MP3 that I wanted on there, then went to edit, settings, chose the 8100 with auto port, then went to data, send phone data, checked ringtone, and all went on with no problem. What version do you have? That may be part of the problem if it doesn't list the 8100. Let me know the problems and version you are using and I will try and help you out.

I have a stupid question...

Is there any way that VZW could tell by looking at the phone that the ringtone was done by bitpim rather than GIN? Call me paranoid, but I am just not willing to compromise my warranty for a ringtone.

I'm not sure. Probably if they looked on your account to see if you've been charged for GIN ringtones and compare it to how many are on your phone. I'd say, if you ever have to take your phone in, just erase them then put them back on.

That was what I was afraid of. That my something would happen to where I could not remove them before taking it in. I think I will just stick with the GIN ringtones that I have for now.

Thanks!

It's easy to remove them. Just go to your ringtones, highlight it/them and press delete. Gone in a second. Then after you have it worked on and get back home it only takes a few seconds to put it/them right back on. No big deal.

I know how to remove them. My point was what if something happens to the phone where I CAN NOT operate the phone. (it won't turn on, can't activate the menus, etc). Then I take the phone to a tech, they get it to operate but find that I need a new phone, and then they notice ringtones not from GIN and my phone is no longer under warranty.

I get what your saying, but how many times has this actually happened to you that your phone became completely inoperable? I have been with Verizon since 1998 and never has this happened. I'd say the chances are slim to none that you would encounter a problem so horrible that you wouldn't be able to erase these and even so, I doubt the tech would even look for this and even if he did see ringtones, he'd have to be suspicious enough to go into your account and try to account for each one over the course of when you owned the phone.

Only Problem created by BitPim/Bluetooth hacking.

1) now I can't use any of the GIN services to even browse (sony music station, modtones).

2) which I could really give a damn about since I am never paying a dime for a ringtone ever again.

I don't know why that would be. Did you use the file system on Bitpim? Because that can mess up your phone, which is why I stay away from it. I ask because I have about 12 ringtones from Bitpim, but can still use GIN just fine.

Very true...it is a slim to none chance...but with my luck as soon as I use bitpim it will happen. Maybe after I have had the phone a little longer I will feel more comfortable, but right now I guess I can deal with what I got. Thanks for all the info.

Okay, I tried this method using the datacable. When I go to send phone data, I get this message:
COM10: Could not open port (2 CreateFile. The system cannot find the file specified.

Sheesh. I think I/it am/is hopeless.

Thanks, Mary. I don't have Bluetooth. I have a datacable and BitPim. The problem I have had--and it scared me to death--was I followed Josh's directions--used his program to change format of the ring. Loaded it onto BitPim, then plugged in my phone via the cable and followed his directions--dat.ringtone--delete. Locked my phone--twice! When it would ring, the phone would shut down. I honestly can't tell you how I got it back-lots of manuevering within BitPim. I really was ready to take it to the Verizon technicians--thought I had destroyed it. So as much as I would love to add some new tones to it, I'm scared to use his directions.
Your Bluetooth directions--can those be the same as the datacable directions?
Again, thanks for re...

Well, I believe Josh is fairly new here and the directions he gave he got from Howard Forums and they were for a much older version of Bitpim that didn't include the 8100 and it scared me that he was putting that info out there. You never want to mess with the file system and/or delete anything in the file system (ex: dat.ringtone). With the new versions you don't have to even touch the file system. People use the file system when either their phone is not on Bitpim's list yet (which they should most definately wait until it is) or they REALLY know what they are doing (like a phone tech or something). But in no way do I reccommend messing with it as you CAN really mess up your phone.

You can so easily put ringtones on your 8100 by t...

Mary, Monica, and all,

Again, thanks for all the help, but I guess I am/it is hopeless. Sigh. I'll just have to hope VZW adds the ringtones I want to its GIN. Really, I don't mind paying for them. But their selection . . . 😢
