Refurb usually. I think it's called a "Factory Refurbished Unit" and sometimes "Field Replacement Unit" I think. Regardless, they will try to give you a refurb, but I think if you find a nice employee, or, if they are totally out of Refurb ones in the store, you might be able to get a new one. 😁

You will absolutely get a refurbished one and if they don't have one, they will send you one (refurbished), unfortunately.

Question...

Did this static first start when you were using your MP3 player on shuffle and you got a call or an alarm went off?

I ask this because both myself and my friend (wwhizzard) got that same thing.

Positive:

1. If you start the MP3 player again and turn it off...your ringers will go back to normal

2. If you use your MP3 player without the shuffle it will not happen again

Negative:

1. If it is like our problem...even if you get a new phone it will happen again.

What we found though is if you dont have a downloaded ringtone from the begining this doesn't seem to happen.

I have only gotten 1 new phone, but wwhizzard has had 6 and it keeps happening.

Let me know what happens

playing mp3's from card on shuffle

alarm went off for about the 2nd time that day and yes that is what caused it

and it was caused once before by a call

don't know if it matters but i have that program that allows you to use ringtones for a card also

i tried to re set my ring tone and then the call was still static.. i didn't retry opening the mp3 player again

has wwhizard gotten 6 reburbished then ?

so basically if I don't have my phone on shuffle this won't happen? well my phone will always be on shuffle

maybe not having a downloading ring tone before you get the update?????

He has gotten 6 new phones I believe. I can not be positive on that one. Mine was a refurbished one.

My parents have the same phone. They do NOT have any downloaded ringtones. I tried my dad's phone and his worked fine. So it has something to do with the "non-standard" ringtones and the shuffle.

I have just given up on the shuffle and used my phone without it. The phone is fine now...but the moment i go back shuffle...nothing but static.

BTW...both wwhizzard and I have not used anything to "hack" the phone. So if it didn't come on the phone or can be downloaded from the phone itself, it isn't on our phones.

BTW...I am sorry about your problem...but I am actually happy that someone else has this problem...we thought we were going crazy for a little while.

Joshua TRUST ME you are either going have to NEVER use shuffle or use it and lose your downloaded GIN ringtones. One more option is to use shuffle and endure the static and just replay the MP3 player to reset ringers EVERTIME you hear static. I chose to NEVER use shuffle again until VZW fixes the software glitch.

By the way all SIX of my 8100's have benen NEW. I got all of mine from the store and when the first three were given to me I was told that they had no refurbs and that they ahd to give me new. The next three I ARGUED that this problem was getting ridiculous and that I WOULD NOT accept a refurb.

For more info search the threads for the other TWO threads that I posted about this problem.

Good Luck.

Well, I just noticed that when I am in an area of "No Service", if I try to play my MP3s, all I hear is static. Then, when I'm back in an area WITH service, the MP3s play just fine.

Anyone else experience this? Weird, huh?

When are all these things going to be fixed?!

I too have experienced the static. I was listening to MP3s when a call came in and heard static instead of the ring (Custom ringtone on the phone I uploaded with bitpim).

Then after the call I went to my ringtones and tried to play the sound and still static.

I just turned off the phone and back on and all was well. I was in shuffle mode if that matters (like some others mentioned)

Yes, it has to be in shuffle mode.

To stop the static all you have to do is turn the mp3 player back on and then turn it off. All of your ringtones will go back to normal. There is no need to turn the phone off and back on again.

Hope that helps
