Can someone post step by step instructions for how to use MP3s as ringtones?

For the 710 I used I tunes and then saved the mp3 to my TF card and then saved the mp3 to the phone, but this way no longer works.

I went to Walmart.com http://www.walmart.com/catalog/catalog.gsp?ca t=202050 since they have 30 second MP3 clips. Right clicked on about 10 clips i wanted for ringtones, saved the MP3 file. I then sent emails with an attached clip to mynumber@vzwpix.com. I then saved the mp3 file from the email on the e815. I now have mp3 ringtones.

The posts where people suggest converting to midi files is not needed...

thats the easy part, so how do you "apply as ring-tone", since verizon blocks that option. Unless you hacked your phone somehow, the option to apply your own sound as a ring-tone isn't there. I would appreciate anyone who uses verizon and downloaded their own ring-tones, other than 'gin', could explain how they did this. I don't quite understand the idea of seem editing, is this the only way to get custom ring-tones?

i have not hacked my phone. i have the option to set it as ringtone from the email or i can save the mp3 file to the phone and set it as a ringtone later. i cannot believe my phone would be special? just got it yesterday from circuit city.

once saved on the phone the mp3 files all show up in the media 'sounds' area which all show up when selecting ringtones.

FWIW all the mp3 files are 235Kb and 64kbps bit rate, but i also have napoleon dynamite mp3's at 56kbps.

For some reason, the first time I sent my E815 a .mid (changed extension from .mp3)(less than 300 Kb), I was able to save it and use it as a ring tone. But after that, it didn't work. Also, I sent a short .mp3 file and I was able to save it and use it as a ringtone. But for subsequent files, it didn't work. The error I get most is "not enough memory to perform operation," even though my phone still has 34589 Kb of free space left. Has anyone had this same issue? Do you know how to go about resolving this issue? Thanks.

The max allowable size for ringtones is around 250k. If the file is larger than that, you've got to truncate it.

I just got my E815 today and tried the wallmart.com > download > email > download to phone technique and it didn't seem to work. It was downloaded to the comp and sent to the phone as an attached mp3 file. It got sent to my phone, but when i tried "downloading" the message it said "Unable to download message. Try again later." So I tried again and again and again and I'm still getting the same error message. Please if anyone has any help or tips I would GREATLY appreciate it. THANKS! 🙂

Just send it by email to your phone. For instructions and tips on MP3 ringtones, do a "search" of the forum. The search box is at the bottom of the forum page.

There is a wealth of information on this subject and most other questions you may have.

It works fine for me, no problem downloading. It is obvious you did not follow the instructions posted earlier on how to do it.

Re-read them and all the other postings and make sure you are following it EXACTLY! 😉

It works! 🙂

If it doesn't work after you have re-read everything, give us all the steps you did so we can find out what is causing it not to work, including any URL site names, etc. The more information you provide, the better we can help. But for what little info you provided, it is REAL hard to figure out the problem! đŸ˜ĸ

hi, the sw version on my one-week old e815 is also 8720_01.17.03
i went to walmart, saved the 30-sec mp3 sample file, then emailed it mycellno@vzwpix.com
my phone rang, a message in my inbox saying that i have just received a new pix message and i'd have to go to www.vzwpix.com to get it.
i went there, logged in and was able to see the mp3 file. but from there i could only save the file in the inbox. so, the question is how do i get this file to show up in my cell phone? hopefully once i get the file in my phone (if at all possible) there will be an option for me to save it to use as ring tone.

Have her check with Verizon and see if the service is actually turned on for her account as it should. If she goes to the store, they can test her phone to make sure it is working properly. Others have had this same problem and that fixed it.

You can see some of the earlier posts on this subject or other tips. 😉

Since some people have different results I tried again the steps (I have yet to run into any error messeges or any other problems)

Go to
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_i ... »
Right-click MP3_Audio under Brown Eyed Girl, save as VM-BrownEyed.mp3 (I dunno if filename length would be a problem?)
Log into gmail (only account I have tried)
Send as attachment to yournumber@vzwpix.com
Wait...
Your E815 will recieve a msg, open it, wait [not really sure what the delay is from], song will begin to play
I press meno key during play which opens a menu
Select 'Save Items'
Select 'File'
Song starts to play again in a different window
Select 'Store' [Right soft key]
Select either 'Store Only' or 'Apply as Ring Tone'

OK, I am a little frustrated and confused. 😕 One of the reasons I purchased the E815, was because I was under the impression that mp3s could be used for ringtones. I am having no luck. đŸ˜ĸ

I followed the same steps you did elvis, but when I get to the 'Store" part, I am only given the option to 'Store Only." I do not have the option to "Save as Ringtone." When I look in my Sounds, it has the mp3s listed, and I can listen to them, but when I go to Ringstyles, it is not there. When I try to add it as a Caller ID, again it is not there. When I am in Sounds and I look at the Menu options for one of my mp3s again no ringtone options?!?!

Is anyone having this problem, or am I missing something? My S/W Version is: 8720_01.17.0...

OK..this is the deal on the MP3 ringtones, MOTO supports it but this feature was disabled by Verizon. Thats why if you send your self an email containg the MP3 u are unable to do what Elvis has quoted. Now it maybe still possible to set an MP3 ringtone if you transfer it to the phone via the trans flash card, but its unlikely, according to MOTO. Also i have a feeling that the reason, the MP3 ringtone is working for some, like Elvis is because they might have the pre release phones for some reason or another, because these are the only phones which allow you to do this, as the software block was not set on them.

Upgrade: i mean te flash upgrade to get VCAST capability (thought i DO have the VCAST icon, so maybe i already have it)

To Apply as ringtone: Go to the sound file (in the media gallery). with the sound file highlighted, hit the MENU button. There you will see "Apply as Ring Tone". Will only work if the sound file in on the phone's memory, not the trans flash card. if you have it on the trans flash, then do the send to a fake number trick as documented on this forum. can others verify this works on their phones too?

How long does the mp3 have to be in order to apply it as a ringtone? Can you make any song into a ringtone as long as it is an MP3? If thats the case thats awesome!

you can make any Mp3 into a ringtone, as long as it is not too long. in fact, i do not know the limits as i have not tested it out yet past 300K, but mine that are under 300K are still quite long. however, i can verify that you CAN transfer an Mp3 that is under 300K or so to the phone via transflash card OR emailing it to your phone, then setting apply as ringtone. works great. please verify that it works for you, i am curious if it works on all phones as some people have trouble doing it (that could be that they do not have actual Mp3's....)

ok, but be careful of i-tunes, it has a strange way of taking control of your music. if you bought the Mp3 from i-tunes you might have a liscense problem. if it just a sraight up mp3, then just go ahead and try it. make sure it is under 300K or so, and email it to your phone as a test to see if it will work. email it to yourphonenumber@vzwpix.com, then apply the mp3 as a ringtone.... i just transfer them with a transflash card and do it that way, it's free... you might have to edit the mp3 down to keep it small... in fact, it might work with larger files, but i just have not tried any over 300k yet....good luck and let me know how you make out...

yea, your rightm, that is wierd. if you can email an Mp3 file pretedning to be a MID file, and it works, then common sense should tell us that it should also work for an Mp3 with .mp3 as the extension. with my phone, i can do both, MID and Mp3 and both work great. so, obviously we have figured out that our 2 phones are different. the real questtion now is, as you hinted already, which phone is the more up to date. i am also afraid to update my phone as you are! it works great for me now, i don't care about vcast, so i am happy and content with it as it is i think. but i do not know which is newer.... on mine, i can send MID and p3 and use as ringtones no prob, yours only MID (even if they are mp3). mine has vcast icon, yours does no...

Well my phone is vcast capable...it gets the little EV icon on the top when it is in the zone. However, I do not have the camera icon that you should be finding in the get it now menu. I too am not that interested in vcast..i have a TV to watch..lol. Im not quite sure what to do, other than the vcast thing my phone is working just fine. If the verizon store has another phone than maybe i will get it. Keep you posted

tough one...if the phone is working as you want it, in fact, you even now have the mp3 thing working, then, taking the phone in for a replacement runs the risk of it not working anymore....i never ever ever trust verizon....but, most liekly, if you got a new phone it would have the vcast and everything you have now and probably work the mp3 ringtine better as well (no need to rename files to mid)...but, as i said, i don't trust verizon....who knows, is it worth the risk? good luck..let me know what you end up doing, i am just curious:

so I went to the verizon store for the 7th time and I got the software upgrade instead of a whole new phone...the .mid thing still works great! (thank goodness).mp3 extension still is a no go on my phone..but its ok since I know the trick The techs at the verizon store don't even have a clue that you can send clips to your phone and use them as ringers. I wonder if verizon will catch on and block future phones from being able to do that? Thanks for all your help by the way...I think im addicted to this website..its great!

So, even though I got the ringer thing to work,I got the phone updated because I didnt have the vcast icon. And even though i highly doubt I will be spending 15$/month for the feature, its nice to know you are getting all the features you paid for and they are there for me to use if i want to. Yeah i was doing the same thing...i had emails notify me when i had a response and those were the first ones I would check...if only i knew about this website when I had my old phone...i would have had a blast! I still find myself checking this site just to be on the up and up on what issues are happening with my new phone.

Hey, thought I would chime in. I have the same S/W as previously posted. I just got the phone from Verizon today. Sending as an MP3 would not give me the ringtone menu.

I saved renamed the .mp3 to a .mid. Resent via email. Now it works! I get the 'Apply as ringtone' option.

Good find guys!!!

Thanks to all for the info on this thread. I went through the entire thing and am still stumped.

i got my phone yesterday, i apparently don't have the vcast software, i can send walmart mp3's to myself listen to them but not save as ringtone. i changed the file extention to .mid and again sent it to myself but am unable to open the attachment. i can't see, let alone play the .mid file.

any input would be appreciated.

thanks,

Same here. I do have the vcast icon though. I can email MP3 and play them but no option to save 'as ring tone'.

Changed MP3 to MID and emailed the same way. When I receive on my phone I can't see the attachment or play the MID file. What am I missing here?

Any help would be appreciated!

Enjoy it while it lasts friends. I too used to be able to send mid files to my phone via the mynumber@vzwpix.com account but no more.

I had about 5 files saved as ringtones and recently tried again only to find I can no longer dowload the file after i send it to my phone.

My friend had the same thing happen to him so I think verizon has figured what everyone's doing and blocked anyone's vzwpix account who has sent an mid file.

Let me know if anyone else has experienced this and possibly figured out a way around it.

Otherwise like I said send yourself as many ringtones as you can cause verizon will stop you. ☚ī¸

You will need an audio editor. There are many on the market. Do a Google search and find one you like. You may already have one. If you are using Easy CD Creator (or Easy Media Creator) it has an audio editor in it.

For ringtone, you should shorten it to about 30 seconds.

You may also want to consider just using a transflash card.

If I had a transflash memory card, is there a way I can just change the MP3 file to a .mid without emailing the file to my cell as an attachment? I was hoping that I can just add it to my memory card and then plugging the card into my cell phone and opening it from there. Any experts out there that are familiar with how it works? Thanks.

regelemarcel

Jul 15, 2005, 1:54 PM
you can transfer it with a transflash card, for free. someone else on this list figured out a nice trick....just send a pixmessage to a bogus number (like 111-1111) with the mp3 attached from your transflash. the message will fail. that is good. then go to your outbox, and, voila, there is your message with the mp3 attached. you will get a menu asking you to save the file, say yes, then you can select it as a ringtone. works like a charm! let me know if that works for you....

you'll need to read previous post or goto to HOFO..

But here's the deal...
Option 1
Hacking E815
tools MPT, P2K, PS sumthing
still trying to figure this out...

Option 2
Sending ring tone to ur #@vzwpix.com
work for a while, but then stop receiving message or recveive it 2 days after.

Option 3
Store ringers on to TF Card
Load it in to ur phone.
Send ring via email to a non-working email address... for ex abz34@url23.org
attach ringtone and send...
Then goto outbox..open meesage...goto next page
save file to phone...
and there ya go....

Well....tell us more so we can help. "not supported file", what file type is it? Tell us more about how you made it including all the settings. Mono, stereo, bit rate, file type, length, etc., what appears on the phone when you send the file? Does it have 1/2 at the top?

The more you tell us, the better we can figure out what is wrong. Remember, we can not see what you did, and guessing is not real productive! ...

Sorry i guess i was a little brief .. Well i saved it as an mp3. then change it to an midi.

30 sec
bit rate 64 kbps
stero
audio sample rate 22 khz

the only difference that i see compared to one that works is the audio sample rate is 24khz on one that works . Would that make a difference ?

Now on the download everything is there 1/2 it says it is playing but there is no sound. then when i try to store it, not a reconiged file format " but its a midi ?

Thanks !!
...
jimspobox

Jul 27, 2005, 11:29 AM
Looks like you did just about everything right. I have used only down to 24khz, I haven't tried lower, you may want to change that.

Also, use the extension of ".mid" instead of ".midi", (no quotes) that may be difference too.

When you send the message to your phone, also put something in the Subject and Body of the message, it can be just one word. There has been reports that this helps at times. Got to try everything!! 😕

Let us know if it works or if you figure it out.
