Heres the thing, if you stay on the data plan you currently have and go over your data allotment you can rack up big charges. It really depends on the all the stuff your son uses the phone for.

The big reason to have the blackberry plan is to have your emails "pushed' to your device. You wont be able to register for that service with out a BB plan and device registry. So no you don't "have to" have a BlackBerry plan. But it sure helps with certain aps. BTW you can get a data only Black Berry plan as well, so you won't have to pay for voice service.

btw the Sprint party line is, "yes you have to have a BlackBerry plan"

Several of my former customers, who were deaf opted for a SideKick. More affordable and data only.
