Display Behavior Question

I recently switched to Cingular from Verizon to take advantage of the unlimited MMS messages until 2006 promotion, and picked the Sony Z500a as my camera phone. I am less than impressed with the picture quality, and I absolutely hate the fact that the external display completely turns off. I never realized how much I used to look at my closed LG vx4400 to check the time and signal strength. So now I'm thinking of switching to the Moto V551 or the Samsung SGH-P777. Obviously, the camera will be much better on the 777, but what does the display do after a period of inactivity?

on the samsung p777 you can set how long the screen remains active from 15 seconds to 10 minutes. and plus you can set when it dims down. anyways after it passes the time that you set, you can always press and hold the volume rocker to make the screen becomes active again. I have never had an experience of using the v551 for a long time, but I have played with my friend's v551, and I think that you can just press and hold the volume rocker as well to ge the external screen to become active.

That's annoying. But if you can navigate through the menu system with the phone closed, why aren't you able to see the time and signal strength? This should appear after you press the soft key and the phone's screen becomes active.....yes?
