Can the Treo 650 be used with AOL mail? Is it as easy as POP mail accounts?

Yes it is , but you do need to have a PAID AOL account to use it but I take it your there already. There is also a AOL program for 20.oo that you can get that will use your internet connection and let you IM with your buddy's for no cost . The 20.oo is a one time buy price

You mean the AIM® program that will let you IM for no cost. AOL® is for members only. Non members will not be able to access the IM thru AOL® but can with the AIM® sofware.

Not true. You can receive and respond to AIM msgs. I do it everyday with my Treo 650.

What is involved is turning on a feature called "IM Forwarding." There is a bit of setup involved, between sending a special text msg to Cingular to activate and also properly configuring forwarding within AIM's service and its software client (whether on Windows or OS X). I suggest don't waste your time using IM Forwarding with Trillian client (an alternative to AIM). I've tried and it doesn't work.. some type of incompatibility that I haven't figured out, nor do I care at this point.

There is a bunch of technical writeups from AOL's tech support website. Go there and search them out. It's explicit in telling you what this service can and cannot do....

Btw, I forgot to add, commenting on the previous two others' comments..

With IM Forward enabled (this is a free setup), you don't need to buy the official AIM Client software for the Treo 650 (which I think costs $30), nor do you need to pay for AOL the monthly $20 to use AIM or email. IT'S ALL FREE, seriously. That is how I set it up for my phone, if you are willing to take the time and patience to figure out how to set up IM Forwarding.

You can set up your AOL or AIM mail for free. It is IMAP. Also there's freeware called TOCCER that you can download to use AOL IM on your Treo 650 for free. INstead of being charged an SMS each time you send or receive an AOL IM, it uses data.

Here's the link for Toccer.

Here's the settings for AOL mail and can be used for AIM mail as well just place aim in place of aol.

Incoming Mail Settings**:
Incoming e-mail uses an IMAP server so please verify that your e-mail application on the handset supports the IMAP protocol. You will need to choose between:

Standard Mail Settings:
Server: imap.aol.com
Port: 143

OR

Encrypted or SSL Mail:
Server: imap.aol.com

Hey buddy, I've used IM messaging forward for years. (Since the day text message became mobile) And you know what. It's not true instant messaging! You got that dang lag time between chats. Its worthwhile to shell out a few bucks for AIM or Verichat if you want true IM. What a huge difference!!!!! It's just like a real time conversation. IM forward is only good for your friends to call you via of IM if you're off line. Sorry, just speaking from years of experience. Also, it's not as hard as you make it out to be for setting up forward IM. Just a few easy steps in your account on AIM's website. Nothing is required to set up on your phone.
