EVDO or No EVDO - That is the question

Mr.S.

So yeah, I am stoked that Verizon will have this phone, but I am worried about whether or not there will be EVDO on the phone. It would be a waste to buy it without EVDO, since an EVDO capable Treo will be out within a year.

However, I have a feeling Verizon would really highlight an EVDO capable feature on the website if it was on the phone. I was assured by a Verizon sales rep that it would have EVDO (maybe something all new Verizon phones are supposed to sport), but of course, they are not always in the know.

Isn't the Cingular version already upgraded for the high speed networks?

I am awaiting word on whether there will be EV-DO support on the phone. If not, the Samsung i730 will make more sense for me, but that means more waiting (another couple of months???)

I just spoke to a Verizon representative and she asked around and responded that it would, indeed, support EV-DO. If this is true, hallelujah!!!

Well, I spoke with another rep, and she now has suggested that EV-DO would not be offered on the 650. 😢

She went on to say that her internal literature states that "National Access" is offered with that phone, and she thought that it would say "Broadband Access" if the T650 supported EV-DO. Now I don't know what to think!

By the way, the general consensus is that the phone will be out the third week of April.

I suspect that she was correct, and that the phone will not have EVDO. Nothing in the literature released has mentioned it. I thought maybe they were playing it safe considering the consumer class action that was filed concerning the v710 Bluetooth disablement, but that was wishful thinking.

I believe EVDO wont be available for the phone until the new 670 prototype is released.

I would be surprised if the phone did not come out the 3rd week of April, based on everything I am hearing. However, and I can't believe I am saying this, even if we'd have to wait two more months to have EV-DO incorporated into the 650, it'd be worth it!

I agree with the previous post. Now I am wondering if it worth sending back my Sprint Verizonized phone (I am within the 30 days). The only advantages to a true Verizon 650 would be price (I bet I could get it for $369 instead of $599 from Palmone), the availability of insurance on the phone from VZW, and the support that VZW would provide for a phone that has been approved on their network.

there won't be EVDO on this one but the new 730 from Samsung will be the next and also the Backberry 7250 is going to be sent a software upgrade in a month or two for it to be EVDO capable. If you want you can go to the website VZW.com, and they have a wait list going for the 650.

does that mean the treo 650 MIGHT be software upgradeable to EVDO also?? i thought it was a hardware thing.

I am not an engineer, but I think it is a hardware AND software thing.

From everything I've read, it appears to me that the Blackberry 7250 had the hardware capability already built in, but needed the firmware updated for it to work.

Re: the Treo, I am still trying to find out what's up with its hardware. My gut feeling is that it does not have the hardware built in.
