Just under the display, there is a switch, this is what lets the phone know the clam is closed. there is a fracture that runs from the side of this switch to the split between the front and rear of the case. As far as the conditions the phone has experienced, I am very careful with anything electronic that I own. I am an electronics engineer and aware of the factors that can contribute to mechanical failure as this. In any case, this phone cost me 380 bucks, I owned a nokia 5185 that I got for free when it first came out, I had it almost four years, defect free. My phone does not see abuse, I'm not a barfly, I work at a test bench all day, in a temperature and humidity controlled environment. I believe this to truly be a manufacturers defect, maybe the plastic was frozen before it was molded into the case, or maybe the hinge in side the phone is off center????who knows, all I know is that Sprint owes me a new phone, and will never give in....thats ok though, I have access to superglue @ work....
