Let's be honest guys... if you gave consumers a choice between a 3300 with no outside display, and a 3300 WITH outside display, probably 9 out of 10 would take the outside display phone.
Its simply too handy... as a watch, and to see who's calling without opening the phone. Nor is an outside display terribly expensive or unreliable. Maybe a few years ago, but hey, its 2005.
Its not like it'd be hard to add it... heck, its practically standard on new phones these days.
