. . . this phone has been on the b2b price list for Cingular since October, and I wasn't sure why it wasn't released yet until just recently. I was talking w/ another drone here at our Cingular hive who mentioned the RIM lawsuit, and suddenly it clicked: this phone was set to be the replacement for the BB in the event that RIM was unable to sell new devices. It's never been made active because now it seems even more likely that RIM will NOT be forced to stop selling Blackberries.

I dunno, just speculation, but whaddya'll think?

I don't recall how long the Blackberry lawsuit has been underway, but if Cingular originally decided to carry this phone (and others) as a backup plan then they have had incredible foresight given how long ago they started testing it. I suspect they just started down the path of carrying this phone because they have a reasonably good relationship with Nokia and wanted to carry a representative sampling of their phones. Also, note that Nokia actually went to the trouble of developing a North American tri-band version of this phone (including 850 MHz), unlike the 9290 or the 9500. Cingular certainly would not have considered it otherwise.

The latest I heard is that Nokia recalled the test phones from Cingular for more software (and maybe...

Almost 6 mnonths after it shows up on the price lists as a 'coming soon', it's finally out. And after RIM has settled the patent dispute favorably. . . I'm thinking the only reason to actually release this phone would be because people want an alternative to the Blackberry devices, but want to keep using the BB server.

It's a minor bummer that while this phone has been released, the 9300i with wifi has come out & yet we still get the old one.
