file format for ringtones?

Phooka

ok. so I just got my new CDM-8940 and sent a picture to my hotmail accound to find out my phone address [ yournumber@vzwpix.com duh ;) ] and then replied to that address with a small mp3 to possibly use as a ringtone.
I received the message with the mp3 changed to a .qcp file and I cannot assign it to a ringtone.

Is there a specific format I need to send the sound to my phone in for it to be recognized as a ringtone?

any help is much appreciated!

You can have mp3 rings if you get a data cable and download Bitpim. From the filesystem, go to user, sound, ringer. Right click on ringer, select new file, and put any mp3 song there(use mp3 cutter to make it 30 seconds). Last step is to connect to get it now, then exit without downloading anything (this makes your phone think you downloaded something). You will see your rings under menu, media, tones. Hope this helps!

well ... this looks a little risky according to Bitpim's website ... I quote:

" The internal software in this phone is far too fragile and shoddy. There is a very real risk of locking up the phone so badly it won't reboot and has to be replaced through trivial operations.

Consequently this phone is not supported by BitPim and you should not use it with BitPim even if it appears to work. You should not report any issues with this phone and we will not respond to support requests other than by pointing to this page. "

At your own risk!!

That's a disclaimer and nothing more!!! I've been using this phone with Bitpim and mp3 ringtones since 4/05. NO PROBLEM!!! I love having a different mp3 ringtone for every contact. BTW, what you quoted was for the 8900, NOT the 8940, which I posted about!
