Its official, this phone does not support SMTP authentication, so you cannot send e-mail from it

Look what I got back from sony support...

Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson Online Support.

It is not possible to specify a username or password for the outgoing server (SMTP server)
You can only specify outgoing server address and outgoing server port. So in short, the S710a does not support SMTP authentication.

After 2 weeks I traded it in for a Treo 650, actually cheaper with the rebate and much more functional. Treo pictures are not as good, and the form is not as sexy, but it actually works as advertized.

Plus the palm OS means if I do find a shortcoming, I can actually buy some software with the functionality I need. Nobody writes software for the Sony Ericsson OS, so if you dont like it as ...

Your review of the phone in the User Reviews section is misleading and you should fix it.

You can send email using the S710a. You just can't send email via POP3 if the outgoing server requires SMTP authentication. That's a far cry from what you said in your review.

I understand that you're upset and frustrated, but that's no reason to lie about the phone's capabilities.

I think may have a mis-understanding of mail protocols.

Mail is never sent via pop3, pop is for reading your e-mail, so is IMAP. SMTP is used for sending mail. They are different protocols, different services and that is why they run on different ports.

I have many e-mail accounts, as I'm sure you do too, and evey-one of them require SMTP authenication. So I can check mail mail, but I cannot send any. This is the case for almost all of my accounts.

Its a vey rare and foolish admin that does not require authenication... just think about the implications

A few accounts I cant even read, I think thats because the phone also does not support STARTTLS, but I have not confirmed that yet.

That and I also mis-read what you were saying. 🤭

You can CHECK email, you just can't send. So it's sorta half enabled.

Grr. Well that explains all the troubles I've been having. They better fix that - there's a lot of people out there who are going to read "POP3/IMAP4 capable" and buy the phone thinking that means they can read AND send emails from the phone. I know I did.

Hey fellas,
FYI, I have Roadrunner as my ISP and I have my phone configured to both SEND and receive e-mails and just to be sure I sent myself a test e-mail from my phone just before I typed this post and it worked perfectly. I don't know if it has anything to do with the fact that it's high-speed cable service but I simply called my ISP and got all my settings info from them and then called Cingular tech support and they used that info to get me set up. I think the rep told me that I'd have to use Cingular as my outgoing server but who cares, it works just fine and the e-mails I send from my phone have my Roadrunner e-mail address as the sender. Maybe this isn't an option for yahoo or hotmail accounts but I am proof that it DOES work an...

I tried several times yesterday to get the Sony Ericsson web site to send me configuration information via SMS and it never did.

I'm trying to use one of my Comcast.net alternate emails for my phone... do you think I should try calling Comcast to get configuration data? Or Cingular? Or none of the above?

I havent checked yet, but if theres a field that says outgoing server, you need to have smtp.comcat.net

Thanks for the settings... I have Comcast email up and running now and it's working perfectly.

So the review is, in fact, wrong.

Yeah, I knew it was wrong from the start. That guy obviously needs a tutorial to how to use his phone properly.

I'd say DEFINITELY call your ISP first and get all your account settings info from them. Then you can call Cingular with that info and have them help you set it up. You may need to use their server settings for your outgoing server/port but like I said it works just fine on my phone and the e-mails I send from it have my Roadrunner address on them. Hope this works out for you. Keep us posted.
BTW, could anyone tell me how to view attachments with the included e-mail app as I haven't been able to figure that out (if it is even possible). I even went so far as to buy the Reqwireless e-mail app with the browser since it was more robust and capable of viewing attachments but I haven't been able to set it up myself. Furthermore, Reqwireles...

I spent 3 hour on the phone with Cingular Support and couldn't make it work and he sent me to a cincular store 30 miles away they could fix it. Back on the phone for 1 more hour we got it this time. We used my email acct and use cingular's out going smtp server which is ( cwmx.com ) that worked.
