Check out this website that explains the difference between the two.

For the majority of people, a MediaNet plan will work just fine, but a Data Connect Plan adds VPN and Data Acceleration which doubles the speed. Also, note that using a Bluetooth connection to your phone to connect to the Internet is a bottleneck with EDGE. Bluetooth is typically implemented on a computer as a virtual serial port that will go as fast as 921.6 Kbps, but which runs at only 115.2 Kbps by default.) While 115 Kbps is generally fast enough for GPRS (and CDMA 1X), it can be a bottleneck for EDGE (as well as UMTS and CDMA EV-DO). In general, port speed should be at least 230 Kbps for GPRS (and ...

I just spoke with a Cingular Data Technician and he shed some more light on this topic. The data plan is a digital (broadband) always on connections whereas MediaNet is an analog (dial-up) connection. The speed differences between the two are drastic! MediaNet is comparable to a 14.4 Kbps dial-up modem compared to the blazing fast 270 Kbps (w/ Data Acceleration) EDGE/GPRS connection you get with a data plan. He told me that Cingular is not stupid and they are well aware that someone could purchase an unlimited MediaNet plan at a fraction of the cost of a data connect plan, but the truth of the matter is that they will not get the same thing, nowhere close. Don't take my word for it, do the research yourself, but please don't post inform...

I agree, trying to connect your pc/laptop to your phone using the MediaNet will definitely make you grow old quickly due to it being slow..but it WORKS in a pinch..however, its good for browsing the net on your phone if you use a web browser such as webviewer (it was mentioned at the bottom of that link you posted). I have webviewer and although it doesn't have javascript, it is a very nice browser..I also have Netfront 3.1 which does have javascript and it is nice also..but not nearly as fast as webviewer, and thats because javascript provides many many more colors and images and takes longer to load up on your phone..
