I just got an a890 and 2 a670s this weekend.

I am very disapointed so far.
The signal strength is very poor compared to my vx4400.

the reception and voice quality is even worse.

I dont know what everyone is raving about with the reception and signal quality of the a890, but this is really bad.... and i thought the vx4400 was bad.

I cannot belive that the manuf. get away with making such crappy prods.

The outside screen is unreadable when no back light. No way to activate the front screen without opening and closing the phone.

Camera is awful.

If you dont hold the earpiece exactly in the right spot on your ear, you cannot hear anything.

VERY DISAPPOINTED.

Just for clarification, I am in Northern NJ..... just ou...

I find it amazing how the phone that most people like (and which includes one VZW's most popular phones i.e. a670) you dislike. Have you tried *228 and then option 2 to update the roaming? Maybe that is your problem. To answer your front LCD light problem...hold the button for 2 seconds and the light comes on. By the way...if your are so disappointed with this phone then why don't you return it if you are still within your 15 day return policy guarntee?

It's funny how everyone's first response to any issue with quality is to update the prl.

I tried it first thing.... no difference.

I should not have to do anything to read any display while in a well light office. There is no glare on the screen. It is just so dark that you have to push the button to see anything. The 4400 and VX-10 had very clear screens. The monochrome with indeglo background is perfect. There is no need for a full color screen that small... if it results in not being able to read it.

What do you think my other choices are?
I have been looking for over a month at all the phones available. All have problems and the a890 seemed to have the least problems. I dont want the vx8000 (feels much bigger than the a890),...

I agree with you that the phones on Verizon always have glitches and problems. I also agree with you that the Samsung a890 probably does have the least amount of problems out of the phones currently on Verizon.

Then you have the problem of limiting yourself to like no brands to choose from. I used to have an Audiovox 8900 and it never dropped calls and I was always dropping it and it always made the calls and connected clearly. I then upgraded to Audiovox 9900 and I love that phone. I am currently using it. I have dropped that phone so many times I can't even keep track.

I wouldn't choose LG because they suck and don't have good long term reliability. Everyone I know who has a LG phone has had problems with it.

Motorola has a good ...

Thank you again for the reply.

I did speak to tech support again yesterday. They told me that the phone is broken... that is why i cannot access mobile web, EvDo, or get it now (even though i was able to access the mobile web on sunday when i got the phone, and get it now up until tuesday afternoon). This is an issue "they just recently learned about on the a890". So bring it in and VZW tech support will replace the phone.

Since I wrote to the VZW CS Rep that I had been speaking to over the past few weeks, on Wednesday and have not heard anything from her, I went and got a line from sprint to try out. I got the i500 for $50 and am very happy with it so far. tons of features and the voice quality is excellent. Same number of bars as ...

Good luck with the sprint phone. I hear the service from them is pretty decent in Jersey. I just don't know how it is Brooklyn.

That is surprising that the Verizon CS never got back to you. So much for their award winning customer service.

so after a few hours of tech support calls, customer serivce calls and time in the tech stores, a tech support rep in the store finally simply dialed *228 and pressed 1..... that fixed everything....

too bad too. i had the verizon and sprint phones all weekend on my trip between NJ and boston and both phones had the same signal strength.

I can say that I did have an evdo connection the whole way though on the verizon phone. too bad they didnt fix it all the times i tried before my trip.

will be switching to sprint.

thanks and good luck wth everyone else's a890

thanks.

It's amazing that it required a basic PRL update to fix the recption problems. Glad everything worked out for you.

It didnt help the bad receptiopn, but it did fix the none functioning mobile web, get it now, and vcast.

I misunderstood what you meant. I only thought that option 1 was meant for initial programming when you first get the phone.
