I just got my first cingular bill and I noticed that every time someone accidentally hit the MEdia web button (the cingular logo underneath the left soft key) it registered 1-10k of data. I got a 1 meg plan on this phone so that we could do limited web stuff, but I'm using up to 100k or more just with these accidental button presses. I've been through all the menu's but I can't find where I can disable or change the button's function. And here's the part that really pisses me off. I can lock the web browser so that you have to punch in the lock code after you start the web browser (like by the menu or holding "0") but that doesn't work with the MEdia button. What is the point of having the lock function if it can be bypasses with a single bu...

There IS a way to enable an option that pops up a message 'additional call charges may apply' which then gives you the chance to cancel the connect before it actually does anything.

Doing this requires a data cable and the correct software though.

There are several software programs out there (free) that you can use to do the edit in question and also many other things with.

Always make a backup of the SEEMs and your phone in general before you do any edits!

Check out the map here. It has a bunch of edits you can do.

The edit in question is SEEM 0032_0001
offset 0F - bit 0: Browser Additional Charge Prompt (1 on, 0 off)
Turning that 'on' will enable the prompt in question that I mentioned.

Now you can go here for the software in the downloads section. You're after the P2K Software section. There's more than one program that will allow you to edit the seems. P2KTools should work fine for you.

You can "lock" the browser so that you will have to enter the unlock code to access it. Under security go to "lock applications" and pick browser. You will have to know the unlock code. I believe the default is 12345....let me know if that helps.
