Cingular Says Edge network is not available

I bought my Motorola V551 from Cingular last October. I specifically chose this model for the size, Bluetooth and EDGE network capabilities. I have been terribly unimpressed with the connection speed and just learned in another thread on this site (https://www.phonescoop.com/phones/p_forum.ph p?fm=m&ff=591&fi=214397) that the firmware loaded on my Cell is not EDGE compatible According to the thread an upgrade from my current version (47_G_08.17.0FR) to the latest (472-G-08.18.16R) will not only enable the faster speed connection but will also enable vibe and ring (I could really use this) and give me more ring tones (I am very disappointed with the ones that come with the phone).

I just called Cingular and the nice girl who answered th...

I work for cingular customer service and I Assure you that EDGE is available. Thought ... my phone is slow as heck and i have a v551. I would hate to see it if i "did not" have edge.

You can find the coverage map on cingular.com here is a link..

Hope this helps.

P.S. Dont forget, we supply the service the manufacturer supplies the phones. So the lack of up to date firmware is motos gig not ours. You goto goto your cable company because your panasonic tv you just bought doesnt have and av jack or S cable jack... you goto panasonic 🙂

I have to say that the v551 EDGE capability is somehow flawed. I had the V400 for about a year and just "upgraded" to the v551. The v551 data transfer rate is dreadfully slower than my v400 which only had GPRS. I tried several v551s (bought/returned, bought/returned) and they all had the same slow response to EDGE. So I decided to wait until most of the bugs were worked out of the v551 software before I used my upgrade...still very slow. I switch my SIM from the v400 to the v551 and back, and the difference in connectivity speed can exceed 2 minutes!

My Panasonic TV doens't have TimeWarner written on the side and when turned on, TimeWarner doesn't flash across the screen.

Most customers think Cingular should be supporting their phone because, more often than not, there's more Cingular than Motorola on the phone.

Thats customer care for you, I'm so glad to be away from that S...!. Truth is most CC reps don't know what they're talking about. EDGE is "supposed" to be available nationwide wherever the GPRS network is available. I have seen the EDGE icon go back and forth to GPRS while standing at the same spot. (I have a V551 I got as a replacement from lockline for my old V505). Now unless you plan to tether your phone to a computer you will not notice a great difference in speed if you are just using the phone's browser. I do recommend getting the firmware upgrade, the vibe and ring is great, an...

You know, I called in when I first got my V551 to ask bout the E on there. Under it were two bars, one red, one green. Usually, with connection related stuff, when one's red, that means either the incoming or outgoing is having a problem. Well, the girl didn't know what Edge was and didn't know what E I was talking about. I told her nevermind, I'm connecting, thanks for all the help. Don't these people read any kind of product documentation? I hate going to BestBuy or Circuit City and knowing more about a product than the person selling it.
