transfering mp3 files for ringtones

I'm using a Mac and transfering my mp3 file to my phone using bluetooth. The transfer goes fine but I then get a message that says file type not recognized. Am I doing something wrong?

Did you change the file name to .mid?

Yes, I changed the file ext. from .mp3 to .mid. Any suggestions?
