Not only does it work like this on all MS SmartPhones (Audiovox 5600, Moto MPx220, etc.) but you do this from the home screen directly without need for entering any other mode. It searches not only the full contact name but also the phone numbers.

From the home screen, you just start typing and the phone displays the numbers you're typing (if you intend to dial a phone number) as well as the filtered results of your contact list. The best part is that it doesn't just search the first letters of each entry- it searches within the entries as well, and even searches through your call history to include calls dialed and calls received and phone numbers within.

Ex: From the home screen, start typing 666. The digits 666 appear on the screen so that if you're intending to dial "666-5555", you can continue to dial. It also starts showing, for example, "Smith, Mom & Dad" because "666" = "MOM" as well as "Monster, Inc." because "666" also = "MON", etc. and all entries that have phone numbers with "666" in them.

If you want to call someone whose name is "Jon", all you do is from the home screen, type in "566" and every entry in your phone book that matches the text combination or digits is shown.

This is my all-time favorite feature of Windows Mobile for Smartphones.
