The phone itself does not turn off. To turn off the phone function, you have to put it in flight mode. (tap the connectivity icon at the top and select "turn on flight mode").
The round button on the top edge is to turn on or off the screen. A quick press should turn it on or off, but there is a slight delay which can throw you off. Press and hold it to turn the screen from bright to battery saver & back.
Go to settings, system, power and tap backlight at the bottom to adjust settings.
