I am torn between two phones....

WOW!!! Finally Sprint brings in the big guns with the LG-535 and Sanyo 5600. I am so undecided on which phone to choose from 😲 I don't mind the sliding phone type, which I know most of my friends dislike. The only difference of these two phones is the phonebook capacity (500 for lg v. 300 for sanyo), the ringer I.D. for the 5600. What is the ringer I.D. exactly well, I will just have to wait and see what the critics over at cnet think. But I am finally glad I have Sprint as a carrier.

Sprint ROCKS!!! 😁

I agree Sprint does rock. I will be switching over to Sprint once my T-Mobile contact is over in January, very nice timing for when these 2 phones come out. I'm leaning towards the 5600 though, bigger screen and I like the flip and the very satisfying snap/click of a Sanyo. Plus if the 5600 is fully duplex, than all the better.

im leaving sprint for cingular (sony ericcsson(sp) 710a is the best phone ever concieved), but i've gotta say, i hate sanyo's with a passion. it does have a solid click, i'll give you that, but when you close it, it doesnt close the window you're on. if you're looking in the menu or whatever and you close it then open it again, it isnt back on the desktop, it is in that same menu. that is just a lame feature in my opinion, but i might just be crazy. i dislike sliders, no real reason, i just do. but if you like sliders, there is a sweet looking samsung with a 1.3 megapixel cam on it.

sprint has a pretty good network though, i am switching cause i want >megapixel camera, and bluetooth. the sony does that, plus dsl speed data that can ...

The Sony Ericsson S710a is not an UMTS phone, meanwhile Sprint's multimedia series is able to deliver up to 307kbps, which is still faster than most EDGE phones. I'm more leaning towards the LG phone, I like the slider, I like the 5600 too, but I don't like the speaker perforation on the front and not a ReadyLink person.

wow, this is a really hard decision to make between the phones. I'm coming from a Toshiba VM4050, so I really would like the 5600, but slider phones are sexy and would be a fun phone. I'm guessing for me, the main breaker (assuming both phones work equally well as phones, i.e. reception...) would be price, speaker-phone (which has full and which has half-duplex), and size. Also, another thing I'd like to see is if you are able to use to mini-SD card to take pictures off. Picture mail is a waste of $$$, so this is a feature that is much needed on the phone. That feature alone my be the deal breaker. I'm definitely going to try these out at the store. =D

The 5600 and the 535 are 1xRTT phones, not EV-DO. They do not have the high speed data necessary for anything like 307 kbps. EDGE, what the S710 has, is faster than 1xRTT. 😉

The multimedia series are on 1xRTT Rel A, hence the data could go up to 307kbps.

exactly. sprint only has evdo in about 5 markets right now, and have no evdo phones (they disabled evdo in the new audiovox slider pda). so yah, sprint uses RTT, edge is king right now.

EDGE is not dramatically faster than 1xRTT. It depends on conditions, but they're roughly similar in speeds. At least I certainly wouldn't call EDGE "3G" or "broadband".

rtt maxes out at about 166kbs, edge at 350-something kbs. so dsl or 56kish. remember, those are under perfect conditions, so expect half it under normal circumstances.

Wish Hat were here to settle this.

1xrtt rel 0 runs at sustained 144K with peaks of 153. In practice, you usually will not attain this level. 1xrtt rel A is deployed in a lot of areas; it is not advertised because its mainly used as replacement or buildout equipment, since Qualcomm no longer makes rel 0 equip. Runs at 230K with peaks of 307. In our area, regular testing with a tethered device (Sanyo 8200 [rel A must be unlocked]) yielded speeds of 190-240K, so I'm fairly sure this is a Rel A area.

and we know that sprint has a habit of locking you our of high-speed (look at the new audiovox pocket pc), and also each phone is diff. my samsung is a 1xrtt, but is slow as ****, so it is also phone dependant how fast it'll go. the sony is gonna be a speedy phone, as it is made to be able to stream video and such. im not saying that the lg or whatever wont, but basically with sprint and 1xrtt, you're not garunteed the speed you are with an edge device on cingular. there is a clear definition with edge devices, and they are always made specifically for high speed apps, and thus are enabled for them.

1xRTT maxes out at 144 Kbps - and pretty much all 1xRTT devices support that (peak).

EDGE is more complicated, because both the device and network can support different numbers of timeslots. But even a top-end devices with class 10 EDGE max out at ~240 Kbps.

That's less than a 2x difference in ideal, peak speeds. That's why I said "not dramatic". EDGE is faster in theory, but not by any huge margin. Most people won't notice the difference.

Also consider that EDGE networks are frequently configured to allow less-than-maximum timeslots, dropping EDGE max speed further. In fact, what Cingular advertises is "speeds up to 135 kbps". That's actually slower than 1xRTT.

I've tested the speed with a laptop with the sony ericsson EDGE card. it got a little over 120 kb/s In the same location (wireless superstore that sells Cingular, Nextel, Sprint and Alltel) the rep showed me the sprint data card. this maxed out at 52 kb/s each card had a full signal and I tested them with CNET's bandwith tester. He told me that the EDGE card gets about 60 kb/s with about half of the signal (which is kind of a generic answer) but he said that the EDGE card performed better all in all.

Whatever you do just don't switch to Cingular. They have really cool phones but their cell phone service sucks! I can't even make phone calls in a house or store. You have to be right next to the cingular tower to get full service or else you can't use your phone. But that's just my opinion.

I would get the slider phone because not many people have a slider phone so that would be cool and different.

since cingular has the most customers in the nation and the longest (30 day) garuntee (so you can switch providers if your service sucks), they must feel pretty confident in themselves. but since what you are saying is invariably true, they must have to pay people to keep their service, huh?

It all depends on where you live. Where I live I get 4 to 5 bars everywhere I go (even at school and other buildings) Alltel, Sprint, and USCC service sucks here! Tmobile is ok but thats because they roam on cingular. Verizon isn't available in this area but they roam on ALLTEL's network here. Just try whoever for the 30 days and then you will know if you'll be satisfied or not. Some regions in the USA have better GSM coverage some have better CDMA coverage. I would personally recomend Verizon or Cingular over the other companies for coverage sake.

I'll have to call BS on that one! it will take them more than a year to two to become the best carrier. Sprints customer service is worst than Cingular's and thats pretty bad. also Verizon will probably remain the top CDMA carrier for many years to come. I used to use sprint and the the phones were cool enough and the Vision service was cool but I had several dropped calls and the service was very spotty.

I am torn too. the lg needs a better battery life to compete with the sanyo I think. 3.0 hrs is nothing!

The only strike against the sanyo for me is the size. It will be kind of massive. But the features may be enough to over look that

decisions...decisions....

I guess we will have to wait and see.

I have no prior experience with a slider and also I am wondering with both phones how much can you do without opening the slider or the flip? for instance, since they have speaker phone can you answer a call with them closed? ?

that would be great!!

Sanyo always had the longest battery life and you can answer the phone and make a call without opening the flip using speakerphone. I'm not sure about the lg. I know the other lg slider with sprint feels kind of flimsy but you can make or receive a call without sliding the phone open.
