ATT TO CINGULAR, A DANGEROUS SWITCH?

Hawthorne

May 10, 2005, 12:43 PM
My wife and I have a family plan on ATT with two v600's. We are considering upgrading to the moto v3 because we like the mini usb charging feature(the v600 charge connection seems to be very touchy). I can get two v3's off of myrateplan.com with a two year cingular family contract for $200. It sounds like a good deal but I do not trust phone companies. Is there anything that i should know? Anyone have any stories to tell me about the switch from att to cingular. It looks like the plan is identical, but who knows?
Any help or advice you guys could give would be much appreciated!

It is my experience that when you are switching from AT&T to Cingular you cannot take advantage of those deep discounts. The main reason is that most of those plans you see advertised with deep discounts are only intended for new customers.

Meaning that the only way for you to take advantage is to get two new phone numbers -- and also remember to check if your AT&T contracts are still valid, as you might be charged the early cancellation penalty. Again, when you sign for one of these plans you will automatically get a new phone number.

No, when it comes to Blue-To-Orange migrations, they are still considered new customers. The discounts he mentioned are from an online third-party dealer.

Be careful!!!

As you mentioned, this is an offer from a third-party dealer. Be sure to closely read the Terms & Conditions and all the fine print. Though Cingular direct outlets (corporate stores, cingular.com and telesales) have certain terms regarding rebates, cancellations and other stuff, 3rd-party dealers often have their own policies. The may take longer for rebate checks of credits, they may have a shorter-than-normal trial period (14 of 15 days instead of the usual 30-day), they may have additional termination fees ON TOP OF the regular ETF from Cingular. $200 for a Razr v3 is a great deal, let alone two of them!

I'm just giving you the usual "caveat emptor" perspective.

If you agree to the terms, and this dealer is trus...

It is not a dangerous switch. It will happen without a hitch. They will migrate your number over to Cingular and you will get new Cingular phones on a new cingular plan and they will also waive the upgrade fee.

I work customer support for the former att and the current cingular. It's only some markets that will charge the ETF, very few. Also as far as differences go between the two plans, it's important to keep your att promos and features in mind because when you migrate, you lose them all. You will get charged an $18 fee to migrate. Also, it is possible to migrate you phone numbers over no problem as long as you don't have an overdue balance on the account and you aren't in a divestiture market. Care can tell you if it's possible. Hope this helps. 😉

Yes it is . Do not switch just to get the Razr V3. You can purchase the phone for $199 from AT&T by calling the NBO number 888-444-4410. Good luck

Actually thats only available to business accounts that have certain requirements. No ordiary Joe can call and get a new phone. ATT does not make phones for their network anymore so we are not selling them. THere are a few for warranty purposes, etc but thats about it. If you got one that way it was a fluke and you are lucky.
