USB cable to charge

Has anyone tried charging their phone with a USB cable? I was told a simple USB to 5 wire adapter works, and that it should charge without software. But it doesn't seem to work. I did not buy drivers, software, etc because I don't use my phone as a PDA. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I think you mean firewire and to my knowledge, you can not charge either way.

I plug in my Dell pda to sync and there is a seperate cable to charge the device that must be connected to ac. This setup is a base charger with both usb and ac connectors attached. If I remove the power cord, I can still sync, but not charge.

I know of no usb or firewire connection that will charge a device of any knid, mp3 player, pda, cell etc.

Mobile Phone tools from Motorola will charge the V3 while plugged in to your computer via USB cable

Aha, so it does require software. Any ideas where to get the software easily? Thanks.

You don't need MPT, but you do need Motorola USB drivers fot Windows to recognize the device. A little searching for "MOTOROLA RAZR USB DRIVERS" will probably yield good results.

Once the drivers are installed, your phone will charge when connected to the USB port...

Wanted to get back to everyone that installing the drivers for windows XP worked like a charm. I also liked the Mobiledit software, though the lite version only entices you. Here is where I found a driver.

"...though the lite version only entices you..."
Well, that's what the lite version is intended to do 😁
I do like it and use it, it makes my phone data handling much easier.

Thanks aprout. The fellow working at Cingular was probably guessing, but didn't tell me that. I will proceed with a simple charging cable.

I have been able to charge my v3 without the softwere running in the background...I used a cable from my palmone tungsten e to transfer stuff back and forth with mpt, but even when mpt is closed it still charges my v3. Maybe its because the palm softwere was running in the background. . . 🙄

I use the USB cable that came with my Sony digital camera. When I am connected to my laptop, it charges my phone. It is my understanding that cheap USB cables may not allow you to do this, however I have not had that issue.

You might need to install some drivers. I installed "MobileAction" drivers for thier sync application.

It doesn't matter if you are using a cheap or expensive USB or if you are using software; you should still be able to charge your V3 RAZR phone while plugged into your computer's USB port. This is a USB hardware feature that is independent of software. All USB ports supply a small voltage to devices plugged into them. This is how keyboards, mice, cameras, etc. are able to work while plugged into a USB port without an external power source. If your phone will not charge while plugged in to your computer, either your USB port on your computer is damaged, you are using a defective or incorrect cable, or your phone is damaged. This applies to both PC and Mac users.

You don't need MPT. I have been charging my V3 on a PC at home and on a Mac in the office without MPT and they all work just fine.

In fact, I'm love with the USB-MiniB charge connection, it's so much more compact than bring your regular charger on the road. I've a Apple USB power adapter that's connected to the wall outlet and use a retractable USB-MiniB to charge my V3 when I don't have access to a computer.
