Yes, don't hold down the side button 
I have the same problem that occasionally I squeeze that button and set the phone to vibrate only and then wonder why I missed a call. But I find the convenience of being able to turn the ringer off easily outweighs the problem caused by once in a while accidentally squeezing that button.
