Just want a basic phone this one all over the map

I am with alltel and want a basic flip phone with external display and speakerphone...that has good reception and decent sound quality.

Reviews of this phone are all over the place..love it and hate it. I have seen it isn't durable to a mom whose 10 year old drops it all the time. From good quality to cheap POS made in Mexico.

What is the story now after it has been around a bit. I cannot believe that Alltel and Verizon would pick up a clunker.

I like the look and less biased (seemingly) reviews tend to rate it well.

Will I be disappointed or happy with a KX1V...again all I do is make and receive calls.

Almost all of the reviews are positive. There are a few negatives, from people who evidently got a "lemon", which is possible with any phone. Just take it back and get another, guys, don't bad mouth the model itself!

I've had mine for 9 months plus, and it's performed exceptionally well, great reception, clear speakerphone, I sound great at the other end (they tell me), what more can one want?

The only negatives I have found is that the phonebook only holds 200 entries -- most phones today take 500. But each entry can have up to 5 numbers. Also, the alarm sounds only if the phone is turned on. Most phones' alarms turn on at the alarm time and then sound.

I highly recommend it. Don't listen to the few detractors. They either...

I don't think it's correct. The phonebook can hold up to 200 phone NUMBERS. The entry can hold up to 5 numbers, but the phone book capacity is 200 numbers not entries according to Kyocera specs. As for the defective phones argument - I've got four of them, all are made in Mexico, all have iffy sound, and I got them less then a month ago, so a new potential customer is likely to get a phone made by the same factory with the same problems.

My Kyocera has 194 separate listings in the phone book, and 20 of them have more than one phone number, so there's proof that the phone book can hold up to 200 distinct entries, each with several phone numbers.

All I can say is, if your assessment is accurate, then Kyocera made a big mistake by shifting production to Mexico a few months ago. My phone from US Cellular (and all the other ones from USC that I've looked at) were made in the USA.

Maybe they will follow the Lionel Trains model. Many years ago Lionel shifted production to Mexico, but returned it to the USA after many, many QC problems with the Mexican production. Maybe Kyocera needs to do the same, if you are correct.

I was also looking at this phone. Just basics with a few extras. A person at work got the KX1V. The first day he was going to use it and went to start a call and it went blank. On day 2 he had it go blank 3 times, by just trying to start a session.

I asked him to check the box and see if it was made in Mexico. It was. He had an order going to return the KX1V and get a LG VX4600 or 4650.

It's unfortunate, but it is beginning to appear that the phones made in Mexico (including the KX-1v) are inferior in quality to the earlier versions made in the USA.

I've had my KX-1 for 10 months thru US Cellular and it's performed extremely well, no problems whatsoever.

Looks like Kyocera made a mistake, shifting production to Mexico.

I ended up getting the soho from Alltel in Kalamazoo. So far no problems, and it is in fact made in Mexico. When I went to buy it there were guys from two different stores working. Between them they could not recall one of these phones being returned to either store. They commented that it has received nothing but good reviews. They said the phones to stay away from now were LG's.

I had a nokia 3587i. This phone is very similar in RF.. I work in a factory in which my office is interior to the building in a rural town (Otsego MI). I can receive/make calls on this phone just as I could the nokia. The speakerphone is fine, not too loud but frankly I think NEXTEL's is ridiculuous loud and bad. I use my speaker in my car...so I am like...

Good.

Perhaps they changed plants or something when they went to the KX-1v version.... maybe Verizon is the only ones getting the lemons. So far all the complaints about shoddy construction are coming from Verizon users.
