The crosshairs icon is for messages, I think. That one IS in the UserManual. Thanks for telling me about the Pitchfork Towers. 
Here in my upstairs office I have two bars, and that works fine.
I find that it is much easier to hear if I have the Nokia HS 11-W earbud on, and I can see myself wearing it a lot. It is actually better than the speakerphone.
