You actually are correct that the SD and MMC are the same thing. The problem is that you are using a 512mb card, while the maximum size the phone can hold is 256mb. So, I'm sure if you pick up a 256mb or smaller SD/MMC card then you shouldn't have any problems.

😲 As the Nokia Rep. said to me so rudely when I called with the same question " I HOPE YOU DIDN'T TRY TO JAM THAT SD CARD IN YOUR MMC SLOT THEY ARE NOT THE SAME!" When I inquired, he told me that SD and MMC differ in that the MMC cards have less conctact slots (the gold pieces) than the SD cards. If you buy an SD for your phone you are wasting your money. I have a Scandisk 128mb SD card and it WILL NOT work with the phone. MMC's are hard to come by. Some websites advertise the MMC's as SD cards such as Tiger Direct, but you need to be very careful. MMC is a type of Multimedia Card. It would be best to get your card from either Nokia, or your cellular provider if they carry them.

Nokia does not guarantee that a MMC memory card larger than 256 MB.

That does not mean something larger than 256 MB will work. I don't know if your warrenty will be good if something goes wrong to the phone due to having a card larger than 256 MB.

I have a 1gb mmc card in my nokia 6255 that works fine. SD cards will NOT work!!! MMC cards are thinner than SD cards and to put an sd card in this phone requires smashing it in there and even then it doesnt work.

You (USCell_Sales) are INCORRECT in thinking and telling others that the SD and MMC are the same thing. They are not, and i seriously hope that xpapabearx didnt take your advice and buy an SD card, because it WONT FIT and could potentially cause damage (although highly unlikely) and or money (likely) and inconvenience (very likely) if he actually went out and bought another SD card. ☹️ It wont even fit into a "Strictly" MMC slot. The only way this would work is if it (the device) were SD AND MMC compatible, these slots are made to accept both. MMC and SD are NOT the same and if you really do sell phones for USCell, you should have done the research, im sure you have the facilities to do so. Even if the SD card will fit into the Nokia 6255i...

MMC cards can be used where SD cards are used. But, SD cards cannot be used where an MMC card should be used. I use a 1 GB MMC on my 6255i and have no problems.

This topic comes up a lot. Do people read the formus or just instantly post a question?

If you want to see why SD and MMC are NOT the same thing (but are vary similar) check out this site: http://www.geocities.com/romidar/mmcvssd.htm

...or google "sd vs mmc" and you will find a wealth of intformation. I have seen a post on here from someone who was able to put a 2gb MMC card in his 6255i and it worked. Shoving an SD card into an MMC only slot may damage your metal cover where the card goes into the phone since there is a slight difference in size.

san disc rs-mmc cards work good. they have the smaller profile needed to fit into the phone. it distinctly says "mobile" on the package.
