I read your post on the v710, and on the SIM card....that's a damn good question. It wouldn't surprise me. But it's still unlikely that you'll be able to use it on Cingular's GSM network. Normally the combo phones like this one are set to search for CDMA networks and use them if they are present by default. The only time you'd see this phone in GSM mode is in an international roaming situation.

I'm not the final authority on this, so if anyone knows for sure by all means step in and correct me.

That IS the way it is being designed for. With the subsidy that carriers pay to keep the phones affordable, why would VZW allow this phone to be bought from them (at a reduced cost) then allow someone to go to a competitors GSM network? You ought to see what these new phones really cost (before the carriers subsidize them). No one would be able to afford them if the carriers did not do this. That is why they are fighting the Feds on selling only unlocked GSM handsets here.

GSM 900/1800 are the frequencies used overseas(Europe and Asia). This phone like the samsung A790 will only work on CDMA networks in N America. It will only access GSM networks overseass. N American GSM networks run at 850Mhz/1900Mhz. The intent as with the samsung phone is to provide a domestic gsm phone that can roam on overseas gsm networks. This phone will not ever be able to access N american gsm networks.

Yes, it will "take" a SIM card, but I think that SIM card has to be a Vodafone SIM card given to you by Verizon. In other words, it's locked.

However, even if you were to unlock it, it doesn't support U.S. frequencies in GSM mode, so it could never be made to work with a carrier like Cingular or T-Mobile USA.
