Because you can only use the GSM network when you are out of the US and in other countries. In the US the phone HAS to be under the CDMA network because thats the network Verizon is on. Also Verizon SIM Cards are only compatible with Verizon Phones its a "Security" measure. Its a strict system thats why they aren't sold like regular phones.
