I can only tell you about Cingular, but I think that it qualifies for both AY&T and Cingular at this point:
Cingular uses the 850 and 1900 band. The Sony S710a is the version of the S700i for the americas, it replaces the 900 band with the 850 and the FM Radio with EDGE high-speed data.

Since you're lacking the 850 band with the S700i but still have the 1900 band available, your signal may just get a little weird. Many towers that only cater to the 850 bunch wont do a lick for you, but there will always be 1900 towers around for your calling pleasure. hope this clears things up.
