No it doesn't. I have the phone and no you can't read the message from the external window, only shows the number and name like a caller id but if taking pics you can take with the phone closed and it does the show the persons pic in the external window.

I read, that on this phone you can have a picture of the person calling on the external window, when they call. Is that not true??

Yes it does! I just found this feature last night, I had taken a pic of my kids and I added my home number to my addressbook and there are options that allow you to have a certain ring and to put a pic, so I set it up and called my cell from home and when it rang, with the phone closed the lil window in the front showed my kids pic, imagine the wow when I showed it to my kids! So the answer is yes.
