Verizon Mobile Web 2.0 and WAP

I know this is a silly question...but, if I get this thing set up thru a WAP proxy or thru a dedicated WAP server on my home computer, can I cease paying $5/mo for "Verizon Mobile Web 2.0?" I guess the nitty gritty of my question is whether I'm paying $5/mo. for the access to check the internet on the phone or for their WAP interface.

Can anyone provide specific instructions for how to set up the 8000 for free WAP access? I've seen posts for the 6000 and 7000 and I'm sure it's similar, but b/c this messing with the phone settings, I'm trying to be very careful.
